I was trying to make it a song-to-song conversation, but everyone has favourites. All this to say that YM and Pendulum could very well belong on Binaural. And there a handful from Binaural and RA that wouldn't sound out of place on LB. Yes there is different production, but things aren't as far off as some are saying.

FWIW I wish Binaural went further on the exploration than it did. They put a bunch of space images on the cover but there is only 1 or 2 songs that fit the imagery. I always wished it was more of a PJ doing Floyd thing...then again I smoked a lot more pot back then.

Yep they backed out of a truly interesting avenue they were exploring. I don't think LB session 1 was as interesting but it had potential.
I think YM and Pendulum are fine songs but not as good as NAIS and SoH. I see the similarities in pairing SoH and Pendulum though. They share a rhythmic and atmospheric place.

The fuck
I find pendulum more similar to NAIS then SoH and YM more similar to parting ways than NAIS, but regardless, the fuck?
FWIW i feel like if YM was recorded round binaural i might have loved it, instead of just kinda liking it.

i think YM gets a bit more credit than it otherwise would because the rest of LB is so generally unsatisfying by comparison
Pendulum can hold its own. I would put that in a similiar category as NAIS and SOH in terms of depth.
but I don't think YM is in their company. its getting more dull with every listen.
But on the whole topic of when did people start getting in to PJ question: I was there from the beginning, but was primarily a soundgarden fan and to a lesser extent nirvana. I thought PJ were pussies compared to Soundgarden. but with kurt cobain dead and SG's breakup there was kind of only PJ left and that's when I got in to them to the obsessive level.
Maybe the Yield promo features that stip points to got a pass back then because it seemed more like an attempt to salvage interest in the whole genre... with hip hop and other pop crap taking over the music vid scene during the PJ-is-off-the-reservation No code period, PJ's Yield re-thrust was a welcome site for some of us who didnt intend to abandon all rock-related conditioning in favor of thugg music... or boy bands.
That said: PJ did use TM, but the prices were still reasonable. i cant remember exactly what was charged on the yield tour but I remember something like $38 per ticket. It was like PJ acknowledged TM sucks but there was mass ticket fraud when they tried non-TM, and with non-TM they couldnt play in as many places, and it was no doubt a time consuming pain in the ass, so they accepted the lesser evil to use TM and play in more places, for the fans, but with conditions (i.e. dont make it balls out egregious expensive). so it wasnt a moneygrab inso much as it was an act to salvage the ability to tour... but one thing seems to have led to another since that time and the ticket prices are now at balls out egregious levels
And the DTE video wasn't quite a moneygrab. it was propaganda. it contained powerful anti-establishment imagery. it was a piece of art. it had a message. it had values. it accepted the lesser evil of utilizing the mass media distribution apparatus for the sake of getting an important message out (not unlike RATM). and DTE succeeded. but then one thing leads to another leads to another and now their music videos look like the B-reel for a Miller-Boyett sitcom intro montage.
So use of the media apparatus in Yield yes, but moneygrab not quite. it was still with some caveats. those caveats have since been blown out of the water.

#1 - The music doesn't "suck" now. It's just clearly not as good as it was (at least clearly to some of us not named stip)
#2 - I would still care about the other shit even if the music was "better". When i have LB on or a recording of a recent show coming through my headphones, i don't really give a shit about the marketing, the moneygrab, the promotion, the post-riot act shift. The production matters, I guess. The songwriting choices matter, certainly. But all the other stuff just undermines the music, however good or bad it actually is. If the music was "better", I would still negatively comment about the extraneous shit just as vociferously.

See above
There are folks other than you who have deep, long-rooted opinions, you know. The "other side" is not really as simplistic as you like to think.

The bigger story here is that in a round about way, stip agreed with me.

Pearl Jam Pre-Riot Act
We just wanna make music, man. Fuck big companies. Fuck business bullshit. We don't give a fuck about that. It's just about the music, man.

Fuck. We don't have any other employable skills. If we keep going the way we are going, what are we going to retire on? From now on, we are a company. We are doing business. It's about sustaining a regular comfortable income we can live on, support our families, and retire on.
