Re: wilco
i don't think i've given Schmilco a fair shot. i decided to fix that while i work this evening.
i bet i wasn't in the right space at the time because i'm enjoying it now. great album so far. nothing i feel i'd skip.

Re: wilco
It took me a few listens, but then it really clicked. If I Ever Was a Child is one of my very favorite Wilco tracks. I adore the closer also. I should listen to this tomorrow. Thanks, dad.dad wrote:i don't think i've given Schmilco a fair shot. i decided to fix that while i work this evening.

Re: wilco
listened to Schmilco a few times last night, with a little bit of Star Wars and Being There mixed in. Then, Ode to Joy this morning.
revisiting The Whole Love now.
Schmilco is really great. i'm glad i gave it another chance.
thinking of going back to try A.M. at some point as well.

Re: wilco
yeah, i also hear a bit of a surf rock guitar going on at least at the start of the song and then in later parts. mostly a country vibe for sure though.tragabigzanda wrote:Schmilco is lovely.
And I am enjoying the new song more and more. Really digging the live and loose vibe. Some legit country, with little Wilco idiosyncrasies and tweedy’s unsettling lyrics could make for one hell of an album.

Re: wilco
The more I listen to this, the more I want to try and outline the distinction between the "alt-country" that Wilco was doing in the 90s and this brand of "alt-country." The little echo-y effects on Nels (?) guitar puts me in the mind of that cosmic cowboy stuff that michael murphey or the flying burrito brothers were doing in the early 70s. Kind of psychedelic, kind of road trippy. Slightly weird around the edges. This sounds distinctly different than the barroom honk and rootsy folk on a lot of AM and (to a lesser extent) Being There to me. I love. That they are circling back to this general territory with a practically new band.
Also, the lyrics should be wedding vows. The subject matter in the song is being a partner 101.

It has a kinda light/fun vibe. Love the harmonies and Jeff’s vocals in general. Nobody is comparing it to their best stuff, but it gets me pumped for the direction this album is taking. It feels fresh considering their last stretch of albums.verb_to_trust wrote:What do you like about it?lennytheweedwhacker wrote:It takes one to listen to one.verb_to_trust wrote:New song seems boring
I think the biggest thing though is it helps not being a butthole.

The thing I keep coming back to is how this feels like a new direction for the current lineup. Excited to hear more of what came from these sessions.lennytheweedwhacker wrote:It has a kinda light/fun vibe. Love the harmonies and Jeff’s vocals in general. And Nels guitar sounds like heat waves radiating from a scorched desert road on this thing.
