I'm 16 minutes into The Invitation.

This is one of the most stilted, hackneyed, and amateur films I can remember. This is fucking terrible. You know that quality that so many indie dramadies have that people hate so much? This is the "thriller" "suspense" equivalent.

I actually liked most of it. But the final 30 minutes damaged it so badly that I came out strongly disliking it overall.

The first minutes are weird, amateurish and the acting is pretty bad. But it gets better.

It barely started anywhere. The writing was so thin. Maybe if they'd had a better group of actors or if the director had pulled better performances from them? Maybe it could have been more interesting?

I will say I thought John Carroll Lynch and Logan Marshall-Green were great. A lot of the other actors were pretty bad, though.

I am astounded that no one's talked about The Dressmaker.

It's got Kate Winslett, Liam Hemsworth, and Hugo Weaving in full "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" mode.

I will say I thought John Carroll Lynch and Logan Marshall-Green were great. A lot of the other actors were pretty bad, though.

John Carroll Lynch is one of the single most underrated actors working today. He was easily the highlight of the film Bar none.

Serious question: did anyone else think Tom Hardy was the lead in The Invitation? It seems to me like they almost wanted people to think that. Didn't really advertise the other actor's name at all and they look incredibly similar.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Never saw that one either, but I get ya. I'm intrigued by what I've seen from Wiener-Dog, but also a little scared. I've only seen Dollhouse (loved it), Happiness (respect it, but it made me feel pretty shitty), and Storytelling (it was fine, but I should watch it again).

Storytelling is my favorite of his films that I've seen so far. With Happiness is a close second.
