My friend who was briefly discussed earlier in the thread only had this to say so far:

“It sounds f’n amazing though. There are VERY few 3 min songs on this one.”

This is all I've gotten out of him, aside from the west coast tour dates which were spot on & I didn't post about because he gave the heavy "shhhhhh" emoji.

Like the production is amazing or the songs are amazing? Does your friend have good taste?

Not sure, but yes he has great taste & is a great musician in addition to being an engineer/producer/co-owner of an awesome studio.

i think the romanticism based on of the earth is rooted in the fact that it's been played live over a decade but never appeared on an album. once it does fans will grow tired of it quickly. there's really nothing special about it.

there's no romanticism i just happen to think it's a damn good song and i appreciate the ambition.

to say there's nothing special about a powerhouse that shows the band playing at perhaps their best in the last 13 years is silly.

well, yeah, compared to the crap that the band has put out in the past 13 years, it’s among the greatest songs ever recorded. but on it’s own, there’s nothing special about it.

I might be a sucker but my hope is that there is some passion fired up in the band and they start working a more projects whether they be albums or eps. Less looking back like they've done too much of over the past 10-12 years.

Isn't saying there are very few three minute songs on the record still implying that 1/4 to 1/3 of the thing is three minute songs though?

just relistened to it for the first time in a while and man it's incredible what a rock band can do when matt cameron is fully committed to being the lead instrument on a song.

Yeah I just YouTube'd Of the Earth from 2010. Hard to believe they didn't feel the need to record that, especially when subsequently releasing some pretty embarrassingly bad stuff.

If one can believe that Italian site, they did record it once or twice, but never deigned to put it on an album. I would guess that's the doing of Brendan O'Brien.

At the time they first debuted that song, I was personally underwhelmed because it felt fairly redundant to their catalog. It had the same sort of Springsteen/folk-rock chord changes that were all over Riot Act, it was long as hell, and for all its detours and psychedelic touches near the end, it didn't entirely gel as a whole.

And I can understand why they decided to leave it off Avocado, because there's no obvious place where it would fit without mucking up album's flow (unless maybe they swapped it out for Inside Job, another long, jammy closer).

They were obviously trying to pivot to something much tighter and poppier with Backspacer, so it's easy to understand why it sat on the shelf during those sessions. And I'm just thankful it wasn't on LB, because the flat production would have ruined the song.

I didn't really fall in love with the song until I heard the Third Man version. Now I think it's amazing, and would be disappointed if it isn't included on Gigaton. But I don't fault them at all for keeping the studio version on the shelf for so long, as it just didn't seem to jive with the albums they were choosing to release.

other than that though, you're right. maybe the logical place for it will be on gigaton.
