That's what kills me about it. Was he hard up? Did he really need this cash? Did he just want them to get made, but didn't want to do it himself?

Got done watching the OT over the last few days. Not watched them in a couple of years.

I have mixed feelings overall. For most of my life, Return of the Jedi was my number 1. But man, it bored me last night. I forgot how much screen time those damn Ewoks get. I don't mind them, but they really took away from the tension. Every time it cut to Luke/Vader/Emperor I was hooked. That shit is the best stuff of the OT for me. But then they'd go back to the Ewoks/Leia/Han trying to take down the shield and it was dull and unexciting.

I'm also struck by how unremarkable Vader seems to me now. Obi-Wan & Yoda do a good job throughout the OT of building Vader's legacy through his little tidbits of info he gives to Luke, so it makes him seem somewhat grander. But in A New Hope, he's fairly standard and doesn't do that much. Its Empire where he has his greatest moment, defeating Luke and then the big reveal about his paternalism. Its here that I think he becomes the mythical, iconic villain. But then in Jedi, he's basically Emperor's lackey and his redemption at the end felt a bit silly to me. Now, The Emperor....this dude is legit. The OT badly needed more of him. Creepy as hell. By the time I got done with it last night, I liked Vader less. And the prequels did nothing to make him any more interesting.

Maybe I'm just still excited about the fact we have a new Star Wars film and that it's super entertaining. But my ranking has totally changed now.

TFA is full of fan service, but it's not a bad thing. It was necessary to create some goodwill that had disappeared due to the prequel trilogy. Episode VIII is where it's going to get epic.

Watched the whole interview with Lucas. He's actually bitter but legitimately with regards film making and distribution and marketing or studios even refusing to pick it up.

But he really should have checked himself when speaking about the sale to Disney.

There is good art that plays to the desires of its audience, and attempts that fall flat. The former speaks to the way in which audience expectations and desires can be a legitimate part of the give and take within art. The latter is pandering (see the R2 and C3PO inclusions in the prequels - the ultimate in bad fan service pandering).

And most of the people on the board excited to see these call backs to the feel and style and tone of the originals are not millennials, by the way

What is truly remarkable about LV's schtick is that it is not being executed in defense of art house cinema, but in the name of blockbuster entertainment that happens to be less popular than the stuff he doesn't like.
