Ukraine's maximalist position (regaining Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk) seem entirely unachievable without NATO getting involved with at a minimum an air campaign. Maybe that position makes some sense in that Russia's demands are totally incoherent and it's not clear what terms they would except for something as minimal as a temporary ceasefire.

The West is running out of relevant artillery and other systems to provide, even with mobilization and foreign training, what are the Ukrainians going to use to retake all this territory?

To be honest, coming from Belgium:

I'm not that scared for a chilly winter. Although that might be because I'm in a financially good position. I'm more scared for the economic consequences of these insane energy prices and for the impact on our next elections.

Yes, voting on green parties was bad. But they didn't make these decisions on their own. Belgium decided to stop nuclear 20 years ago. Not a single government since (and the green party hasn't been in a government since) has turned back that decision.

As to Ukraine. I'm currently (re-)reading these two books. We were never really taught much about that. The war ended in 45 and all was well in Europe. It's sickening what happened in the east. I hope we don't let them starve again.

The Russian Defense Ministry said Saturday that it had removed forces away from areas outside the major Ukrainian city Kharkiv, a major development in the ongoing war. Ukraine may have taken thousands of square miles of territory in what might have been the fastest breakthrough in months.

But it is really remarkable what has happened in the last few days…the scope of success is so great that organizations are hedging their reporting on it, half expecting it to turn out to be a fog of war misunderstanding or flat out misinformation.

They were on the back foot for quite a while, but they never lost as much territory as quickly as they have recently regained in recent days, outside of maybe late February.

There are tankie true believers that cheer Russia on, but the America first objections are not without (limited) merit. Will we claw back some of those HIMARS/ GMLRSs and Javelins until they are replaced by new production? Carl Gustavs were reportedly taken out of active duty SOF units to get sent to Ukraine.

This is maybe less of a concern in that any possible conflict in Asia will be Navy and Airforce centric. We don't have massive reserves of these systems, so it was sensible to limit the supply until we had some confidence that Ukraine would prevail, and that seems to be a hopeful, maybe even likely scenario.
