I just can't get over the bland power chord white guy rock riff that this song is built around. How does a guitarist like Stone go along with something this blah?

It's an Ed song, it's not going to reinvent the wheel. I agree the production actually helps this song.

Actually think BoB did a terrible job. Lots of guitar stuff going on that just sounds like mush.
He tried to mush it to hide how bad it is
He actually did it a favor. Any live version illustrates just how bland the song is. There is nothing going on. by BoB mushing it all together and putting on some bells and whistles, it feels more energetic than it actually is. Same thing for Infallible.
So, in that regard, I think BoB did something worth a damn.
Strat's right. It's a bad song whose individual parts don't really gel together, the live performances reveal that very plainly. The studio version papers over the cracks and gaffer tapes it all together as best it can.
It feels like the kind of song that wasn't extensively rehearsed or even played by the band prior to entering into the studio, as though Ed came up with the basic idea and they just threw it together with Brendan as they went. I can't see how they could've played it in a room together without realising it doesn't work. For all their talk of writing simpler songs that are easier to play live, a lot of the last two records feel the same way to me and you can feel that in the live performances.

Doug is literally the MVP of Pearl Jam on this one. He’s the best contributor by a mile.

'Fraid not, 'slow.
It's Vedder all the way down.
Jeff did work as hard as possible to make it interesting.

so i'm mostly right. ed had the opening guitar strums which inspired jeff to basically write the bass melody that guides the whole song.

I listened to this song and started to think maybe it wasn't that awful. Then I listened to Who Ever Said and reverted to thinking "Nope, Getaway is awful."

It's Aerosmith's riff, note for note.
The song was called... I cannot remember the name of the song.
But it had the exact same riff, note for note.

I like Getaway second fav song on the album.
It’s one song on LB where the production works.
I’m still not sure why the song doesn’t start with Jeff’s bass riff

Getaway is one of the least offensive things on Lightning Bolt and I genuinely like the chorus as a little "believe your own thing / go your own way" type anthem; PJ is generally kind of bad at landing superficial pop-rock anthems but this is a long way from their worst attempt

oh, the pre chorus is groovy too, "and if you wanna have to pray... it's alright" is delivered nicely
every time PJ shoots for something "fun" and doesn't miss by miles, I respect it

pity that Getaway only exists in non-offensive form on the album
every live rendition has been Fecal+
was a spirited intro to whatever that album was called it was on

eddie sounds so fake at times in this, it's like a preview of what future ai-generated pearl jam will be.
that said, i do find myself bopping around to this one when it pops up in a shuffle

What's the name of that Aerosmith song tho, the one that has the exact same riff and vocal melody... Can't put my finger on it. Dang. It's been nagging at me for days.

Now I'm curious which song you're thinking of. Is it a more recent one or an old (70s) Aerosmith song? Do you remember any details about it?
