Doing a back to back listen of All Hands and Dig Me Out, liking the latter better so far. It's a little more garagey / raw. Both good albums though.

This seems backwards. Dig Me Out has always seemed like one of their most accessible, catchy, and shiny albums to me.darth_vedder wrote:Doing a back to back listen of All Hands and Dig Me Out, liking the latter better so far. It's a little more garagey / raw. Both good albums though.

The songs are more catchy, but the sound sounds a little more garage rock to me. It's possible it's all getting mixed up in my head, but song wise I definitely enjoyed Dig Me Out more (today).Leatherhead wrote:This seems backwards. I still think Hot Rock is one of their best albums, and it has such a different feel compared to the records that came before and after it. That run of Dig Me Out --> Hot Rock --> All Hands is a really great example of a band experimenting with the contours of their sound in subtle, but still surprising ways. The fundamental building blocks are the same, but are used in very different fashions.

Yea, The Hot Rock is awesome. Maybe their most challenging album?digster wrote:I still think Hot Rock is one of their best albums, and it has such a different feel compared to the records that came before and after it. It's up there, along with the new one and The Woods. The new one's probably the most overtly "challenging" album for fans, but it's also an album that's experimenting via a wholesale change of their tools and approach, as opposed to something like The Hot Rock. But it's certainly a mood record, which is especially wild from the band who made Dig Me Out, which is just basically one punk anthem after another.Leatherhead wrote:Yea, The Hot Rock is awesome. Yeah, I think lyrically this is probably their darkest album; besides Love, there's not much optimism at all. Even a song like Can I Go On, which on its surface sounds cheery, is pretty bereft of any hope whatsoever. There's not a lot of moments of the inherent optimism in fighting that you find even on parts of The Woods, as dark as that record can be.

I dont think i agree. I need more listens but its SK fuck you attitude all around.tragabigzanda wrote:I think one thing I'm really missing from the new album is the sense of brattiness that seemed to exist on all their other records. Re: Sleater Kinney / Wild Flag / Quasi / related bands
"All Hands" and "One Beat" are my favorite by some distance, though I really think "No Cities to Love" is solid and has aged well. I like "The Woods" but have never found it to be the masterpiece that most do, and "Dig Me Out" isn't quite my cup of tea -- the songwriting on that one just doesn't hit home for me, I feel like their other albums scratch the same itch but have more songs that get under my skin in a meaningful way. I need to spend more time with "The Hot Rock."
Top 5:
Ironclad
All Hands on the Bad One
One Beat
Light Rail Coyote
Jumpers

Sympathy
Although Sympathy is not in my top 5, it’s probably Corin’s greatest single performance on record. Read the story of it in Carrie’s book. Chills every time.
