There are folks other than you who have deep, long-rooted opinions, you know. The "other side" is not really as simplistic as you like to think.

I'm not reading all that. you lost me after the first statement in the previous reply where you somehow still avoid recognizing the desire for commercial success was their primary concern. i recognize you are referring to me, but i just dont care.

Not the first or last time this question will be asked about this single, I imaginewarehouse wrote:is this real?broken iris wrote:LetMeSleep wrote:So 99 Problems as the Xmas single with Shattered with j Tripplehorn as a bside.

This is the part of the thread where you should start to tire at the sound of your own voice.hlniv wrote:Surestip wrote:Illumineddie?hlniv wrote:See abovestip wrote:no, just that all this nonsense is how people who think post riot act pearl jam sucks are coping.

So, has desire for commercial success been the primary concern over the last ten years? Yes? No?
That's the question.
The question is not how people who don't like ten years of PJ music are "coping"
Given how you define commercial success, no. I think the moneygrab stuff is stupid, and at times borders on tin hat conspiracy theorizing. And when it doesn't it often comes across as petty.hlniv wrote:Surestip wrote:Illumineddie?hlniv wrote:See abovestip wrote:no, just that all this nonsense is how people who think post riot act pearl jam sucks are coping.

geez, the guy gets laid one time, and suddenly it's all he can think aboutstip wrote:Concerned about expanding the penetration of their music: Yes
With Occam's Razor in mind, let's all realize the above statement is probably closest to being right. It would be better than the alternative: theorizing endlessly about things we don't really know the answer to in order to satiate our misplaced anger at Eddie Vedder and the Pearl Jams.If the music has suffered (I think it's gotten better than where it was, but certainly not as good as the peak) it is due to this lack of time spent working on it or running out of ideas after 20+ years.

This may be hard for you to believe, considering how you've pigeonholed all of the "moneygrab" opinions into one simplified category, but I actually agree with most of what you've written here. There are only two clarifications required-stip wrote: In terms of what matters/influences:
Concerned about expanding the penetration of their music: Yes
Concerned about making as much money as possible to the detriment of other concerns: No
Concerned about making the best records they can: Yes
Concerned about writing songs that will fit well into the live shows: yes
I think these concerns have led to a return to writing songs that are more immediate and less insular: yes (which has been the approach used on Ten, Vs, Yield, S/T, Backspacer, and Lightning Bolt--nothing new here--it's a different style of writing that has defined more than half their studio career)
Which is the most important I couldn't tell you. I suspect it is
Help me understand how this is not a desire for commercial success? I understand that you think it's not their primary concern (and we disagree on that), but you're just playing with words here.stip wrote: Concerned about expanding the penetration of their music: Yes
Does this imply that you believe the songs on S/T, Backspacer, and LB are equally "immediate and less insular" as the songs on Ten, Vs, & Yield? That's a little difficult to understand.stip wrote: I think these concerns have led to a return to writing songs that are more immediate and less insular: yes (which has been the approach used on Ten, Vs, Yield, S/T, Backspacer, and Lightning Bolt--nothing new here--it's a different style of writing that has defined more than half their studio career)
