I don't like the Beatles, Neil Young, The Who, or any number of musical sacred cows. I can go on at length as to what I don't like about any of them. But after a while I have to admit that in the face of the critical and popular adulation these artists have sustained over time my issues are idiosyncratic to my personal tastes rather than anything inherently flawed in either those artists or (and this is important) the audience that appreciates them

The Beatles, Neil Young, and The Who are a flawless comparison to TFA. I see no problems with that example at all.

I presume this will be the case for everything going forward - the double shelf life. We are just first. I suppose insofar as our stuff takes root we will have a larger footprint.

Given the way the Internet helped destroy common cultural touchstones in the name of individualized experience the reproduction of shared characters and broad stories helps replace some of what was lost.

The absence of a substantial collection of iconically shared characters and culture unique to them will be part of the upcoming generations' reduced ability to get sucked into this trashy trap. That, and expanding entertainment technologies that will probably change a lot of how we approach storytelling.
