What is the purpose of the slip mat?

Just keeps the record off of the scratchy metal platter that most have. You can purchase higher quality mats that actually can improve sound, or purchase better platters that don't need a mat at all.

I just completed my collection of Pearl Jam studio albums on vinyl. I'm using a Denon DP 33-F turntable with a Sumiko Blue Point no. 2 cartridge connected to a NAD 7020e receiver with Mission 70 MKII speakers and a pair of Sennheiser HD 650 headphones. It's basically a beginner audiophile setup built around mostly vintage equipment. I haven't listened to everything yet, but here's what I've noticed so far:

Vs. - Sounds great. No complaints.
Vitalogy - Sounds more alive than the CD, but there is also a decent amount of static at the rocking parts and some vocal sibilance
Riot Act - Same as Vitalogy. This is the big disappointment so far.
Lightning Bolt - Same problem.

I expect surface noise, but I didn't expect the other distortion elements. I'm going to check my cartridge's tracking. The turntable is level. Other records by other artists are definitely sounding a lot better. I know that some of this could be mastering, but I wanted to hear from others who spin these records. Should I be aiming for clarity here, or is it impossible? I am working on a more sophisticated cleaning regimen, but I don't think that's the problem. In the case of Riot Act, this was the first time it had ever been spun.

Being new to vinyl, I get that this kind of thing comes with the territory. But I've invested in a system that should make stuff sound good, and it's frustrating when it sounds better on Spotify.

Can't help ya, then, except to say that because of all the issues people had with Lightning Bolt, I don't know if I'll ever have a "good" copy or how it's "supposed" to sound (although the one I have now is definitely better than the one I started with).

johnny cash's american series (I-VI) gets reissued this week. i need american recordings, unchained, and the man comes around (how i never picked that one up in the first place baffles me) so i'm looking forward to finally having them. also, apparently willie nelson's 'teatro' record is getting a vinyl issue later this year- i am highly anticipating that one.

While they look cool, you have to be careful with slipmats because they can deaden the sound from your deck or change the vertical angle of the cartridge if it's a bit thicker than the original. It's one of those minor tweaks that can add or detract... so it's worth doing some quick A-B checks before just throwing it on the platter.

FWIW, I used to have a cork mat on my old table and thought it added something. It looked like this:

Led Zeppelin is finally getting into the remaster-game. I guess it was about time. Let's hope they do the albums justice.

With the June 3 release of deluxe editions of Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin II, and Led Zeppelin III, the band will launch an extensive reissue program of all nine of its studio albums in chronological order, each remastered by guitarist and producer Jimmy Page. Led Zeppelin will also open its vaults to share dozens of unheard studio and live recordings, with each album featuring a second disc of companion audio comprised entirely of unreleased music related to that album.

"The material on the companion discs presents a portal to the time of the recording of Led Zeppelin,” says Page. “It is a selection of work in progress with rough mixes, backing tracks, alternate versions, and new material recorded at the time”

Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin II, and Led Zeppelin III will each be available June 3 from Atlantic/Swan Song in the following

Single LP – Remastered album on 180-gram vinyl, packaged in a sleeve that replicates the LP’s first pressing in exacting detail. (For example, III will feature the original wheel and die cut holes.)
