Re: RANK THE ALBUMS
I think PJ has overall done very good work. The only bad album they've made, IMO is at the bottom of my list, and that's Backspacer. But I don't think it's bad for PJ; I think it's a poorly-written, mostly uninteresting album. There's definitely 2 songs I'll go back to, but most of it just doesn't interest me, especially when the band has done good work elsewhere. S/T and Lightning Bolt both have problems, but I think there are songs and moments from both those records that make me think they're not out-and-out poor.stip wrote:For people's bottom rankings (I'm thinking of the meh comment or phatJ's so fucking bad comment for backspacer) are these albums you actually do not like at all, or are they just albums that you think are decent, but not up to the standards you had come to expect.
I know i'm in the former. Even the albums at the bottom of my list I think are pretty good.
And as for the bolded, I just don't know; embrace the hate, stip!

I get that; I had immediate positive responses to each album except LB (which was a bit more mixed initially). I absolutely loved S/T when it came out. I think people want to like the music this band makes and try to give a grace period.

Re: RANK THE ALBUMS
The bottom three albums for the vast majority are going to be the last three. Let's focus there.stip wrote:For people's bottom rankings (I'm thinking of the meh comment or phatJ's so fucking bad comment for backspacer) are these albums you actually do not like at all, or are they just albums that you think are decent, but not up to the standards you had come to expect.
I know i'm in the former. Even the albums at the bottom of my list I think are pretty good.
At this point, I think S/T is pretty good, but a step below the previous 3-4 middle-era albums. Most of the songs are good to great, but it's a tough album to listen to for various reasons. I labeled this as good, and it really could have moved up a notch with just a few different choices.
I couldn't stand Backspacer right out of the gate.
#1 - it was too damn short
#2 - the Fixer made me want to vomit in my mouth
#3 - Amongst the Waves was supposed to have been so much better
#4 - most of the rest was just uninspiring and nothing stood out
So, I had an almost immediate negative view, much more than just not living up to my expectations. However, over time, I've grown to understand it a little more and appreciate its place. It has now risen to the ranks of "sort of good". But, that's going to be it's peak I'm sure. I still can't really listen to the Fixer, but some of the others have grown on my tremendously - Force of Nature, Johnny Guitar, GSMF
As for Lightning Bolt, I described this as "meh", and last in my rankings. It is the only album that has as many songs that I truly don't enjoy at all and avoid listening to. Getaway, Sirens, Future Days, LTRP. Lightning Bolt (the song) is just butchered in the mixing and production. Infallible is nice, but a disappointment.
If LB was released by any other band, I would not have listened to it enough to grow to like much anything on it. Because its PJ, there's a few songs in there that have stood the test of time and I enjoy. But, it is both an album that falls below my expectations, and for about half of the running time, an album I don't enjoy listening to at all.

see, that's where i'm at with the bottom of my list as well. There are quite a few pearl jam records I only listen to if there is some RM related prompting to do so, but I still enjoy itevenslow wrote:My bottom two are the last two: Backspacer and Lightning Bolt
I really appreciate Backspacer because it knows exactly what it is and I like that they tried to consciously do something different with it. It's not nearly as good as Vitalogy or Vs. or Yield but, then again, I'm not asking it to be. I'm happy with it as it is - a fun little record.
Lightning Bolt is much more problematic for me because in many ways it feels like the opposite of Backspacer in that they didn't go into it with any kind of game plan. Rather, it sounds like they did everything they could just to "collect" 13 songs so they could finally put an album out.
I still get satisfaction when I listen to it, but I can't tell you the last time I wanted to go out of my way to listen to it.

Re: RANK THE ALBUMS
It follows the correct pattern (1-5 Vitalogy - Riot Act, 6-7 Ten and Vs, 8-10 the last three) You just have the first 5 in the wrong order.Self wrote:It's the correct list.Kaius wrote:I have been waiting patiently for someone to buddy up with. My list exactly.Self wrote:No Code

I fairly enjoy every album, LB and Backspacer are definetely inferior to the rest for me but still quite fine.stip wrote:For people's bottom rankings (I'm thinking of the meh comment or phatJ's so fucking bad comment for backspacer) are these albums you actually do not like at all, or are they just albums that you think are decent, but not up to the standards you had come to expect.
