Heartattack and Vine - Bone Machine

Or

Mule Variations - Bad As Me
I would say Heartattack and Vine - Bone Machine because of the change on his music. Very profound. But its all very good.

Good News! Tom is currently in the studio working on his next album. Stay tuned.

He is a true artist. I have no doubt he will create until the day he dies. I'm just speculative on whether he sees an album cycle as something worth going through all the trouble to do in 2020 at age 70. He's not Bob Dylan!

Woke up, made some coffee and toasts, put The Heart Of Saturday Night. Such a cool relaxed vibe.

That was the record that made me fall in love with Tom Waits. That was the gateway drug.

It is yeah. Its wonderful. Im listening to Alice now, and the title track has a vibe that goes to that album.

Blasting Small Change.

Sounds like the perfect album for this quiet, chill afternoon.

Listening to it now, I really like a lot of these songs, and I think it contains his very best spoken-word "story" track... but I think the main reason for its high ranking on my list is "Muriel," which may be my favorite song of the entire era

Listening to Real Gone (the spotify mix). Sins of My Father is a better song than I give it credit for

From memory, my ranking is:

The Heart of Saturday Night
Foreign Affairs
Blue Valentine
Small Change
Heartattack and Vine
Closing Time

I really don't think I like Closing Time at all.
Anyway, I'll start listening through these tonight and see how my opinions have changed.
We've been leaving out One From the Heart in this discussion because it's a weird kind of "in-between" album, released just after the Asylum years but very much part of that era in terms of feel and overall aesthetic. It's also a soundtrack album which sets it apart somewhat, as the songs were written in service of the film, but it really does hold together as its own thing. Listening now, this is a gorgeous album, probably better than half the list above. Swordfishtrombones would be released a year later and change everything

Well said.

I adore One From the Heart. Great, underappreciated record.

I love how "big-budget" it sounds. Wish he got to make a few more albums with this level of production
