We watched something called
Dream Lover last night, a 1993 thriller kind of thing starring James Spader and post-Twin Peaks Mädchen Amick (actually, quite a few Peaks/Lynch alumni showed up - which made sense when I noticed the casting director was
Johanna Ray.)
Perhaps it was just that it exceeded our low expectations but it was actually pretty good in an undemanding, Hitchcock knock-off way.

Watched...well, suffered through Jupiter Rising last night. Man that movie is terrible. Just a bunch of tropes thrown together with deus ex machina's everywhere. God Damn. I never felt like "Jupe" was in peril because she was in peril for the entire movie and at random times. Man. And that Redmayne guy...he won an Academy Award the same year this came out.
They basically destroyed Jupiter the planet at the end, right? Because I don't care how much memory juice you got, you can't erase a planet. And why not show it?!? You spent so much movie on special effects, at least show a planet blowing up.

Sullivan's Travels. Preston Sturges is wildly overrated.

Who's he and what is that movie?
Acclaimed screwball comedy director. Socially-minded screwball comedy starring Joel McCrea and Veronica Lake. I tend to find a lot of beloved comedies from the '30s and '40s to be painfully dull. This one seems downright hypocritical; begins as a messy satire before becoming exactly what it was satirizing. Ugh.

Do you think it's because the comedy is dated? What do you think of Shakespearean comedy? Or the Three Stooges?
Not really; it's not all of them by any means. A lot of it is still very funny. But, like most comedy now, it's also very uninspired aesthetically, and tends to suffer when it gets loaded with self-righteous liberalism. I like it when it's genuinely biting, or driven by great performers like Cary Grant. And I like when it goes way out there like the Marx Brothers. Mid-brow like Preston Sturges is just a dead zone of interest for me though.
