This was probably inevitable, some kind of event or crisis that was an inflection point for how the mushy middle of the country would view his presidency. There was bound to be some combination of the administration's inherent cruelty, incompetence and willingness to lie about everything in a way that is apparent to everyone. I'm sure his base will remain his base, but I think how the country reacts in the next week will be pretty telling for how things will be going forward.

I totally agree cages are wrong and separating families of asylum seekers is wrong (and likely illegal), but what do we actually do here to help both the asylum seeker and the people here already in need?

You could start by not criminalizing everyone who is crossing the border which is causing the separations in the first place. You can do what they were doing before the Trump administration changed their approach, which numerous officials have already admitted is an attempt to deter border crossings, however much Nielsen tries to avoid even hinting at that.
