when do they up the cutoff requirements?
The only cutoff I want to see are the cut off heads of the leading establishment candidates displayed on pikes outside the charred ruins of DNC headquarters.

“My point is that even as we push the envelope and we are bold in our vision, we also have to be rooted in reality and the fact that voters, including Democratic voters and certainly persuadable independents or even moderate Republicans, are not driven by the same views that are reflected on certain, you know, left-leaning Twitter feeds or the activist wing of our party.”
Obama gets it
This is also from the speech.
“Voters, including Democrats, are not driven by the same views that are reflected on certain left-leaning Twitter feeds, or the activist wing of our party,” he warned. “And that’s not a criticism to the activist wing — their job is to poke and prod and text and inspire and motivate. But the candidate’s job, whoever that ends up being, is to get elected.”

He goes on to say...
It’s a vision that clashes with some on his party’s left, most obviously including supporters of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. And while he dismissed the debate between persuading voters and energizing base Democrats as “a false division,” he explained that he’d been thinking about how the candidates have been talking about him on the trail. “I think it is important for candidates to push past what I was able to achieve as president. I wouldn’t run the same campaign today, in this environment, as I ran in 2008, in part because we made enough progress since 2008, of which I am very proud, that it moved what’s possible. So I don’t want people to just revert to what’s safe, I want them to push out and try more, alright? So we got the Affordable Care Act. It was a really good starter home, as I say,” he said. “I don’t want people just standing pat, because we still have millions of people who are uninsured.”

“I don’t take it as a criticism when people say, ‘Hey, that’s great Obama did what he did, and now we want to do more.’ I hope so. That’s the whole point,” he said. “I think it is very important to all the candidates who are running, at every level, to pay some attention to where voters actually are, and how they think about their lives. And I don’t think we should be deluded into thinking that the resistance to certain approaches to things is simply because voters haven’t heard a bold enough proposal, and as soon as they hear a bold enough proposal that’s going to activate them. Because you know what? It turns out people are cautious, because they don’t have a margin for error.”
Obama has always been somewhere between the progressive & moderate, and I think it's wrong for anyone to suggest that he's for/against either side. The full quote was not exactly an endorsement of the safe, moderate approach either.

It didn’t occur to you to suggest a party dedicated to smaller govt and vigorous protection of individual liberty. Weird.
How would a small gov't vigorously protect individual liberties? I want to understand and not mock what appear to be contradictory statements.

By staying out of the way.

That's not vigorous though. That's kind of the opposite of vigorous. Unless they are vigorously staying out of the way?

Well ideally, from a libertarian perspective, if you are in favor of a government at all, it's one with one purpose: to protect the (negative) rights of the citizenry. That would make it a fraction of the size it is today.

We need an SNP-like separatist party, only many of them.

My highest level of excitement for a political candidate in my life was, "Well, ... This one's better than that one."

It’s amazing and, in its way, catastrophic that the democratic electorate looks at 2018 and the 2019 specials and thinks that their best hope is to nominate some kind of moderate who either opposes marijuana legalization and pines for the years that got us here, or who legitimizes Trump (by embracing false narratives, no less) and repeatedly praised the Tea Party.

To be clear: in Kentucky, in Virginia, and in Louisiana, democratic candidate ran primarily on moderate to conservative platforms. They got less of the right-leaning vote than ever. They won because of high liberal turnout, and because of The sweeping liberalization of suburban women…a group that wants massive healthcare reform, massive gun control reform, LGBTQ and women’s rights protections, and a rejection of racism.

Being a moderate was less important to success than motivating Democrat-leaning voters.

IN KENTUCKY.

So of course we’re gonna go with Biden or Pete.

Are you so sure about the BTQ part of LGBTQ?

On the contrary, I suspect that they like and want the language of protections, but that it would take only a small amount of change before they grew fatigued. Nevertheless, for 2019 and 2020 elections, the language of tolerance towards those groups is associatable with increased momentum in suburban districts.

Joe Biden’s campaign accidentally sent out its “hope I made you proud” fundraising email hours before the debate even starts. Top shelf grandpa work.
