I didn't find this compelling at all. The more apt comparison isn't to Afghanistan COIN or the Tribal Awakening, it's to Mosul or other urban conflicts with ISIS. This is what they went in claiming the objective was.

If a 1km buffer zone and controlling border crossings was the objective, there isn't a very compelling reason to go into Rafah. 10, 20K more civilian casualties to what, degrade Hamas from 70% to 80% (made up numbers)? Could've gotten that buffer zone* done much faster than whatever it is they are attempting to accomplish. It's not clear that they know what their desired end state is or if it's achievable. "It's too expensive to keep Reservists activated" is not a valid consideration for what is allegedly an existential risk.

* Arbitrary 1km buffer zone could also be established within Israeli territory, at least away from the Egypt border

What does it accomplish on the Gaza side? What are they going for beyond an Israeli controlled defensible open space? Would've been faster and cheaper to establish that in an already mostly clear area. Probably would need to be more like 5 km if the objective is to reduce the risk of anti tank guided missile attacks.
