OK, now even quality news sources are saying things like "The FBI is preparing to indict Clinton."
THE FBI CAN'T INDICT ANYONE.
THE FBI CAN'T INDICT ANYONE.

Re: Election 2016
I don't know what you guys think of Paul Krugman, but since this is a conversation between liberals about Sander's "BREAK UP THE BANKS!!" cry, here are some of this liberal economist's thoughts on breaking up the banks:
edit: for some reason my laptop isn't letting me select his text to copy it. Sigh.
Here's a link to a search page on his NYT blog for instances of "too big to fail".
Basic bullet point summary:
--Shrinking the banks/breaking them up would not have prevented or materially altered the 2008 financial collapse.
--Example of 1930's banks run (quotes from Ben Bernanke's [great depression was his specialty] writings on topic: "Most of the failing banks were small banks and not members of the Federal Reserve system. Thus the fed saw no particular need to try to stem the panics." Krugman: "The point is that breaking up the big players, then saying that it is OK to let banks fail because no one player is crucial to the system is not a solution."
--Banking inherently poses the risk of destabilizing runs, so the government should regulate during normal times and rescue in crisis. The size of individual banks doesn't make much difference.
--While the mortgage backed securities hit the bigger banks hardest, the commercial real estate losses were even larger on a per-dollar basis and largely affected smaller banks.
--Breaking up big banks would not protect us from financial crises.
--"History says that financial players will overreach even if they don't expect a bailout--in general, I believe that the dangers of moral hazard are overrated...It's really hard to envision a financial system in which we can blithely let major institutions fail. So my view is that you can't run a financial system without a fairly active regulatory role; autopilot just won't do the trick."
--It's not possible to shrink financial institutions to the point where nobody is too big to fail.
--Finance is deeply interconnected and even a moderately large player can take down the system if it fails.
--"So I think of the pursuit of a world in which everyone is small enough to fail as the pursuit of a golden age that never was. Regulate and supervise, then rescue if necessary; there's no way to make this automatic."

One of the biggest advantages to breaking up the banks (which Krugman indirectly touched on in a recent column) is that it significantly reduces the political power of the industry and its major players making regulation both more possible and likely to be effective.

True, and though I think his economic policies are naive and show a troubling lack of understanding of globalization and multi-nationals, it's about time that US America was able to talk openly about elements of modern pseudo-Socialism and their potential benefits. Censoring ideas you are uncomfortable with is for undergrads at Oberlin, not people trying to figure out how to make the country better and more fair to all it's members.cutuphalfdead wrote:WaPo is really down on Bernie, high on Hillary.
