No competition. A general disinterest in going to the movies (at least across America in general; rising prices) and groundbreaking 3D technology. It made going to the movies AN EXPERIENCE. And one you couldn't get at home. You had to go to the movies and spend the money.

It didn't hurt that almost every showing was in 3D with the $3 surcharge.

The avatar thing did create a massive culture thing online. Much the same way Lord of the rings did.

Don't know if it's sustained as much as the LOTR one has but it probably has.

I liked it. I'd say Lucas was in a total ragin bitch for when he saw it and the final battle.

Cgi it may have been but unquantifiably better than any in his prequels

Avatar was a really moving experience in the cinema that utterly failed to translate at home. I can't remember the names of any characters. I'd assume the sequels will fail, but has James Cameron ever had a miss?
