Starters have routines, pitching out of the pen is a whole other animal
This is exactly how the Sox won the WS last year though.

Teams mostly do it because it's generally a really effective strategy.

and with the information available today teams aren't playing/managing like it's 1968.

Hello, it's Arizona 2001 calling.
Its probably only worked as much as it has, because of the quality of pitcher they are doing it with, and the quality of their bullpens.
Its not like they are bringing in a number 4 starter to close it out with Mariano sitting in the pen.

As for not managing like its 1968... Warren Spahn had 28 saves throughout his career, he was always available
and holy, from age 36 - 42, he led the league each year in complete games. 5 of those years he led the league in wins, and 2 of them he led in innings pitched.

That’s exactly what I was going to say. Of course they aren’t throwing their shitty 4th or 5th starter. They already have shitty bullpen guys that can pitch shitty relief innings, they don’t need an end of the rotation dude for that. They are bringing in aces in relief BECAUSE it’s generally more successful and they trust their best pitcher(s) in the biggest spots most - regardless of the inning.

This. Astros letting their series go five games and having to use Cole in game five is a big plus for the Yankees.

Ya know Trumps probably going to tweet something along the lines of Washington finally being great again while hes president crap...
Might be the first time I ever pull for the Cards ever.

I had an uncle from St Louis, who every time he would visit would tell a story about (fill in some pointless fishing/hunting/random story) then when he gets to the... what year was it, 82? wait no, that's when the Cards beat the Brewers. Every. Damn. Time.
