Except for the River. that song is devastating.

Bruce Springsteen is an extremely gifted songwriter, storyteller, and observer of the human condition, and though his catalog (especially post-1987) is inconsistent, I'd say it's no more so than most. But his songs do have a way of taking on an instant identity, one which is virtually unshakable no matter what "mode" he's in, and if that's repellent to you, none of the other stuff is even going to register. I understand. That's how Morrissey is for me. And most punk rock.
