1979 is the quintessential song of the 90s. Put it in a time capsule type stuff.
I fall into the trap of wanting to retrack Mellon Collie too but if I'm in the mood I can go straight through and enjoy the whole ride.

a top 12, eh? i don't expect anyone to agree with most of these, i'd say my pumpkins tastes are not the norm.

also, billy and jeff played a song i'd never heard at the plainsong show i saw a few years ago, 'prairie song', and of anything put out by billy/the band in the last decade it is easily my favorite. while oceania was tolerable, i can't really listen to the last couple records, they're just grating for the most part.

"Tales of a Scorched Earth" is unbelievable. Corgan had such a knack for manipulating fuzz and noise textures into melodically pleasing songs. It's kind of a shame he strayed so far from that shoegaze-y skill set; I wonder if he still has it in him anywhere.

apparently this is a zwan-era song, so not from the last decade, and thus nothing in the last ten years has been interesting to me. shame.

not really. zeitgeist is probably the strongest record; united states from that album is worth listening to just to listen to jimmy drum. superchrist is that era but a standalone song, and is alright but is kind of same-y and not anything they hadn't done better on earlier records. the song G.L.O.W. seemed to be liked alright, but didn't do much for me. the only teargarden songs i thought were worth repeat listens were a song for a son, astral planes (the music at least), and owata, but like with much of the stuff in this eras billys vocals are usually too loud and just too much, and some of the instrumentation is certainly questionable, especially owata. after that, like i said above, nothing since has really been anything i've enjoyed and simply found to be a chore to listen to.
i wouldn't bother with corgan's solo records. though some people seemed to think ogilala was alright, so i wouldn't steer you away from it if you think it's something you'd want to give a go.
edit: but if you like epic live jams ala silverfuck from the mid-90s, listen to that gossamer. the song hasn't been released at all, not even sure if they recorded a studio version or not, but those 2007 versions were anywhere from 12 to 35 minutes. when played live since then it's been halved.

honestly it wasn't until someone pointed it out to me that I even noticed it wasn't Jimmy on the drums, kid's pretty good.

I really love the Zwan album -- I enjoy it as much as Machina if not more.
And I like Zeitgeist a fair amount too, though my impression of it is colored by just how happy I was at the time that it existed. But there are some songs I really like on there, especially "That's the Way My Love Is."
I've been pretty cold on everything since, though I haven't listened to all of it.

Zeitgeist is an album with flaws, specially the production, but there is enough good material to check it out. Pretty much all the songs from Teargarden are better live...the studio takes are so weird or they mix Billy´s voice too upfront. G.L.O.W. is a song i appreciate. The same with Gossamer..amazing live jam.
Oceania is the weakest for me. Its ok, but i hardly feel compelled to come back to it. Monuments And Melodies is very weird, sound like Billy on a karaoke machine, but there are a few cool songs there too.
Shiny is good, i liked that one a lot.

Just started listening to these guys non-stop again... the older I get the more amazed I am about how much music this band has put out and how good it is overall. The deluxe editions of Gish, Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie, Adore and Aeroplane are NUTS. They had 4 or 5 more all time classics in them from that first era of the band if they had just decided to put out an album every 6 months.
