Why do you think that sentiment is so bothersome to you coming from Star Wars fans but not Star Trek fans?

I think part of it is that SW fans are appropriating the franchise. They don't care about the artist who created it, they just care about their own misguided nostalgia. To the point where they actually say a new film the creator wasn't even involved with that is essentially trying to mimic the creator's earlier films is more "Star Wars" than the creator's own recent Star Wars films. They think they know the artist's art better than the artist.

The objections to contemporary Trek, however, are largely couched in outrage over how the people handling it are the ones who appropriated it and turned it into something its creator never wanted it to be.

They both might be fan outrage over how their beloved properties are being handled, but they're coming from opposite places.

However, upon further reflection, one wonders what would have happened if Gene Roddenberry had done an about-face in his later years and altered the fabric of Trek's ideology himself. Then what would the fan outrage mean? And how would I feel about it? Hmm.

Aprocryphal "my son/nephew loved it" stories aside, Star Wars is indeed now playing out as something marketed to adult memories, and not to creating something lasting for the next generation.
