The day I realized that I was pigeonholing RHCP the same way most casual music fans pigeonhole Pre-No Code Pearl Jam was an enlightening day. Pretty much everything after Blood Sugar Sex Magik gets into some pretty non-funk territory. A lot of it is deeply mellow and even dark. The funk stuff got refined too as the core band gelled together. Plenty of stuff prime for visiting and revisiting. It's a shame this group is so stigmatized.

It's a bop, but Don't Forget Me and Dosed both shit all over it.
Don't Forget Me is definitely up there. I've watched this video too many times to count.

Case in point:

This is the Place>Dosed>Don't Forget Me

This trilogy is practically a non-linear narrative of addiction, heartbreak and depression and what happens in the places where those things live.

And those guitar lines on Dosed. My god.

Oh for sure. Most atmospheric RHCP record? I love how out of place Dave Navarro looks on the back of that CD too. The band's like, "we're here and we're weird. We're the Peppers!" And Navarro's just like, :| His guitar on that album functions the same way.

i think he looks good in the context of that moment of the band. Damn, he did a brilliant job on that album, he brought this psychadelic element, almost as a new version of Janes Addiction.

And the band looks so sad, dark..

I love this phase of the band.

It’s not the funk that bothers me. It’s AK’s rhyming, voice, and lyrics.

the main thing I can't get behind with this band is the lack of emotional weight to their songs; if all your lyrics are nonsense, what's the point of writing one after another for decades? I know this is my hangup and totally personal though

Same. I may like this band if they had a good singer.

wrong.

They have many emotional lyrics. To name a few from different eras:

Taste The Pain
Knock Me Down
I Could Have Lied
Transcending
My Friends
Brendan´s Death Song
Porcelain
BONE FUCKIN´ TOMAHAWK.

I know it’s hardly the connoisseur’s choice, but I really have to give this to Under the Bridge. It’s just a great song.

I’m actually not a big fan of Can’t Stop.

This is the Place is the By the Way song I’m most fond of.

This new album’s growing on me, at least a little.
