I think he must have. It looked like he may have been reading one, but it was hard to tell over periscope.

Faint praise perhaps but coming after Journey and that Lenny Kravitz spectactle I was struck by how authentic and raw of a rock band Pearl Jam still are compared to some of these other karaoke dinosaurs -- for as polished as their studio records have become, live they still just sound like five dudes making some noise together, and that's....something, I guess. The performance was no better or worse than most present-day PJ gigs, but hey -- what can a guy expect? I enjoyed Krusen playing drums on "Alive," "Given to Fly" is my all-time favorite PJ song, and "Better Man" is the song that got me into the band, so given that it was going to be a hits set from the get-go, I certainly couldn't complain about the song choices ("Given to Fly" actually seemed like a bit of a renegade selection; it was probably the least widely-known song played by any performer all night). Letterman's speech was great despite demonstrating minimal awareness of the band's actual music, but the fact that Eddie started his by rambling about climate change and then immediately dropping a Chicago Cubs/World Series reference had me on wince alert the entire time -- a nice throwback to his 1996 Grammy acceptance. The "RITFW" was hilarious; that curly-haired guy from Journey kept looking at Eddie during his solos as if to say, "Watch me shred. WATCH ME SHRED. I WANT YOU TO LOOK AT ME LIKE YOU LOOK AT MIKE McCREADY WHEN HE SHREDS."
Side note: One of the members of Journey thanked "Golden Voice Recording Studios in Pekin, IL" during his speech. Pekin, IL is a rat-hole small town about ten minutes from Peoria (where I live) and is widely acknowledged to be one of the most racist towns in the state (its high school team in the '70's and '80's was the Pekin Chinks). Golden Voice Recording Studios is the studio where my father recorded his first demo in the late '60's, before he shipped off to Vietnam; he tells the story of cutting his first demo at Golden Voice Recording Studios the same way Al Bundy tells his four touchdowns story, so hearing the dude from Journey name-drop it was vaguely surreal. I always had a feeling in the back of my mind that this studio was a figment of my father's imagination, as it doesn't seem possible that anything like a recording studio would have ever existed in such a shitty little town, and I certainly can't fathom what kind of reputation it must have had to have tempted a non-local musician to visit Pekin, IL to make a recording there. So thank you Dude From Journey for giving shape to some family folklore.
An enjoyable watch. Thanks to whoever shared the live stream link.

When Eddie went into that cumbersome evolution bit, I hit mute and came back a couple minutes later.
Ed's gonna Ed.
Otherwise it was fine.

Journey Greatest Hits 1 is a perfect greatest hits album.
Journey Greatest Hits 2 shouldn't exist at all.

They did well. Mentioned everyone they should, and played a nice set. Really cool seeing Dave K on Alive.

A couple of Mrs LMS quotes.
The Easter hat parade at the school yesterday was more rock n roll than this. Maybe they should have hats.
Look at all those model wives.
Number 1 woman in his life? Sounds like he has more than a few.
It's not you 40th birthday. Quit talking about you wife and kids.
Eddie looked like a lesbian in the 90s.
There were others but I've forgotten.

I actually got a bit emotional through all that. These guys really do mean a hell of a lot to me.
I loved Letterman's speech and thought he was a great choice (albeit 2nd choice). I loved his "thanks to Pearl Jam all concert tickets in America are now free" bit.
I thought they all spoke well and the songs sounded damn fine.
Thanks to the Periscope fellow - above and beyond.
I could be convinced to go with you to get a stickman tat, stip.
