“I just heard that Sarah Huckabee Sanders was refused service. I am upset about this enough to complain on the internet!”

“I just heard that Sarah Huckabee Sanders used an official White House comms tool to single out and punish a private business, and I feel meh”

I think the main thrust of the argument here is that a person's sexual orientation is not the same as someone's personal decisions about the policies they choose to enact as a member of a political administration. I've had some trouble organizing how I feel about the situation over the past few days--on the one hand, of course the owner of the restaurant had every right to do what he did, and of course I find SHS to be a willing participant in the Trumpain machine; but, on the other, I think that allies of the LGBT+ community "citing" the SCOTUS decision on the bakery when defending the owner's actions to be, well, icky and weird.
They get hard from the irony of the discriminators getting discriminated against. It’s a core tenant of progressive thought.
I first heard the word "schadenfreude" in the aftermath of the 2008 presidential election. While I think my post history clearly demonstrates what a fucking bleeding heart I am, I don't get bent out of shape with the "liberal tears" memes or anything like that, because it was happening at the same rate back then when Obama supporters were telling conservatives to go back to their cabins with their cousin-wives while the real adults took over.

Everything aside, I think refusal of service is problematic at any time. I also think the efforts to create some moral party-level scandal out of the actions of one private business is embarrassing, and that 99% of the crocodile tears over this are just for the respite from having to endlessly defend xenophobically constructed actions.

Well, everyone has been speaking about (and been up in arms about) this, as opposed to the thousands of children that have been separated from parents over the previous few months. So overall, I'd say this is probably a success.

To be clear, I think the business has every right to deny her service for any reason they choose (that is not a violation of the law). Where this concerns me is that this behavior could start going to way beyond kicking trumpettes out of restaurants given how these things tend to spiral into a competition. It wouldn’t be the least bit shocking that the phrase “feel unsafe” starts entering the discussion as it has in so many university spaces.

Guidos was holding back tears from the first moments. He asked her how she was, whether she had eaten. Was she playing or studying or going to church? Despite endless requests over the past month, no one had told him her location or when she might be freed, and she was too young to know.

Had the people there bathed her, he asked? Combed her hair? Given her toys?

“Papa,” she said. “When are you going to take me out of here?”

And that’s when he really began to cry.

It's because it fits the narrative; if it wasn't this, it'd be something else. When you have your narrative, you find whatever you need to to support it.

I find myself a bit ashamed that I agree with Trump a little bit. I think most people without documentation should get some due process, but if we catch a guy walking over the border without documentation, the process for putting him right back over the border should be swift. "Hey you, you just walked over that line. Do you have any proof that you're allowed to do that? No? Go ahead and walk right back, thank you."

You're going to have to have courts for asylum seekers and people standing in the middle of Iowa without papers and people for which you can't identify a home country, but the majority of immigration proceedings should be swift.

We need more judges working these cases.

Oh, man. Millions of conservatives are going to be vociferously angry about the slippery slope into total incivility that a sitting president attacking a small business owner and slandering their establishment represents. Right?
