That one’s good for the bar crowd and the bartenders. Some songs just have the kind of bass line that gets everyone into rhythm. Beers pour, money exchanges hands, everyone moves in step, over and over again. It’s like a basketball team on a 15-0 run, or a jazz band improvising on a good night.
Another song that does that at my bar is Rip It Up, by Orange Juice.

Enjoying a cocktail with friends at this joint yesterday afternoon. Wasn't until about 15 minutes in that I realized they were playing nothing but Hip-Hop and Rap music. The music totally fit the vibe and made for a fantastic experience. I didn't know any of the songs. Didn't recognize any of the artists, but it was a joy. I think a big part of it was the volume level. That might have way more to do with this subject than the genre/style of music being played.

Yep. Was it older hiphop or more recent?
It was a pretty good mix. I didn't recognize any of it but it felt like it was spanning the last two decades, mostly.

I unwisely found myself on the wrong end of a “you and your bar are racists” exchange last night when I confronted a guest about stiffing a bartender on a $100 tab for not playing Cardi B.
I shouldn’t have intervened, rare chance that anything good was to come of it, but I really needed my bartenders to know that I had their backs.
I told the customer that I would have appreciated if she had come to me about the music instead of taking it out on the bartenders, who had nothing to do with it. Luckily her friend took the bar’s side, apologized for the incident, and bought a bottle of water to leave a big tip before escorting her out.
Still, that had the potential to escalate into some bullshit.

You absolutely did the right thing, Reid. There's no excuse for stiffing on a $100 tab.

It's important for staff to know that the boss has their back too.

Pro-tip: Pandora is mostly terrible, but a station based on The Meters is all any bar needs on a Thursday night. Lively enough to get you thinking about the weekend, almost no lyrics to mess with, gets your bartenders moving, feels familiar even though it's mostly not, and pairs very well with sports on TV (especially basketball.)
Added bonus: This is one of the only times you'll regularly hear Beastie Boys instrumentals pop up on a bar playlist.

Ugh. I heard "Bright Lights" and "Numb" and at least 3 Black Keys songs tonight and heard "Bright Lights" and 2 Black Keys songs on Sunday afternoon.
That's more Black Keys than anyone needs in a lifetime.
