I haven't heard "Open Road." I don't think I'd heard of it before this thread.

I think "Out of My Mind" attains "real song" status in a lot of people's minds, more so than the other improvs, because it was on a CD single that a lot of old school fans played to death prior to the bootleg age. I actually like the Philly '09 version better than the original--something about the sheer absurdity of recreating a fifteen year-old one-off improvisation (reportedly, because some guy would write a huge check to a charity if they did it) feels more special to me than, as you say, a two-chord jam from an era where improvs of the sort were more or less standard fare.

I haven't heard any of the Yield songs pre-Yield. Are they on Gremmie?

the b-side status helps. For a long time I thought it was a real song they just never released.

I don't think so.

But, you can listen to Brain of J on pearljamlive.com or youtube. 11/4/95 San Jose

And, in regards to Red Mosquito, the first time they played it (11/1/95 SLC) is easily one of the best performances of it. Mike is absolutely incredible. You can listen to it on pearljamlive.com.

The San Diego performance from 11/7 is great too.

This is wack.
Not really. If you listen to the '95 version, and then imagine what it would sound like recorded in studio at that time I think you'd like it more. At least, I would.

Still, I'll admit the difference is marginal at best.

Red Mosquito is another that sounded better at its earliest incarnation....along with Brain of J.... but I encourage folks to make sure they get their hands on the soundboard quality boots of these tunes from '95. They are out there.

theplatypus wrote:I can't for the life of me understand the fascination with "Out of My Mind". Aside from the novelty "oh shit they made it through four minutes of alternating between these two chords without collapsing" factor, there's not much of a song there. Surely no one here would seriously pick it over any one of the No Code tracks?
You can probably blame people like me for the initial fascination....here's why: "Out of my mind" was released in - I think '94ish - as part of a CD single.

It came out at a time when all of these previously unreleased jams/tunes were out there, but only on crappy cassette tapes, so when a "new" song came out as an official release with soundboard quality, people just gobbled it up like free stuffing at a Thanksgiving dinner.

So, it's more of a nostalgic thing for me.

That whole SLC show is awesome (doesn't it have Lukin as well?), including:

The Brainf of JFK, as it is on the boot, has slightly different lyrics and the chorus "the whole world will be different soon, go to hell if you don't believe it" or something like that. I always preferred that to the awkwardly pronounced "relievED"
