I feel like the only song that doesn't really serve a central purpose for the record as an opener is Getaway. That's not against the song, it's just that the role it plays is "here's our first song in our new group of songs." Most of the others seem to work with the rest of the album, in comparison or contrast to it.

It's certainly the other weak choice, but I'd put it ahead of Breakerfall nevertheless

Once, Go, Last Exit, Sometimes, Life Wasted all PERFECT for the albums they opened...honestly so is Brain of J, Cant Keep, and Gonna See My Friend...all of them tell you what album you will be listening to, work as good first songs, and set the tone. Getaway is a step below that but still good. PJ has a 9/10 perfect record with openers and this is the one total black mark because besides sounding bad (IMO) it doesn't even set the tone for the right album because the strengths of Binaural are nothing like this song.
Breakerfall is better than Once, Life Wasted, Gonna See My Friend and Getaway. I'd even entertain an argument that it's better than Sometimes, too.
I disagree on many levels, as I think it's a worse song than all of those, but even if you liked it better than GSMF and Getaway as a song (Better than Once? Really?) it doesnt work as an intro to Binaural because Binaural does not sound like this song after the first 3 songs which are very out of place on the album.
Who says all of an album has to sound like its opening tracks?
The opening track is essentially setting the tone of the album, it has an important role to fill to make the album sound like a cohesive work. Which Binaural does not.

It took me awhile to warm up to this song, but now I really enjoy it.

I generally prefer the studio takes, but for this song, I think it works better live. The Lubbock, TX one from the 2000 tour is good.

This song worked very well as the second song of the main set during the 2000 tour.

My confusion is directed toward the idea that any opening track "essentially sets up the tone of an album" or " has an important role to fill to make [an] album sound like a cohesive work."

It sets up Binaural by pulling in the opposite direction of where the album eventually lands you (though I really think the first three songs on Binaural fill this role). It sets up the album very well. A first track should set up a record, certainly; what I don't think it has to do is mirror sonically, lyrically or vocally what the rest of the record does, which I think is what is being implied.

Brain of J is similar on Yield; it's really the only straightforward PJ raveup on that record (Evolution is up-tempo, but that's done with a wink and a nod). But that works; the verses of that song are looking backwards while the choruses look forward to the rest of the album. It sets up the record but it doesn't mirror the record.

I was in the middle of typing a long response that essentially boiled down to this, so I'll just say: Team digster. :luv: :luv: :luv:

I think this about many of their post-Jack Irons songs.

This guy gets it.
Nah.

For me Breakerfall was easily their worst opener at the point it was released and remained so until the last two records.
