Re: Broadway Joey
If it was just the songs performed with no narrative would you still be affected?

Re: Broadway Joey
No. Obviously these songs mean a lot to me. They're a huge part of the experience that I had, for sure. But the story is quite powerful on it's own. Sometimes it's a little on the nose and preachy. And it's a little more stagey than I typically like. It's not perfect. But the book hits the right notes more often than not. And the cast is up to the challenge.LetMeSleep wrote:If it was just the songs performed with no narrative would you still be affected?

And as I've said before, I've seen Alanis perform these songs, no narrative, and while I was moved, it wasn't the same as what this was.

Who are your favorite Broadway performers? Also what do you think of Sutton Foster

Re: Broadway Joey
I think Sutton Foster is super talented and a joy to see on stage. I harbor a bit of an unfair yet deep dislike toward her only because she made my life a living hell for about six months. But honestly, she's a decent person and an incredible performer.theplatypus wrote:Who are your favorite Broadway performers? Also what do you think of Sutton Foster
My favorite Broadway performers... that's tough. There are too many to list. But Audra McDonald is #1 on that list. She might be the most talented actress/singer on the entire planet.
Others I can think of off the top of my head: Judith Light, Damon Daunno, Mamie Parris, Saycon Sengbloh, Adam Driver, Katrina Lenk, Lena Hall, Bill Irwin, Stephanie J. Block, Mercedes Ruehl, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Norm Lewis, Anthony Ramos, Jessie Mueller.
There are a bunch more.

True, but I will say that the musical was still better than it had any right to be. I liked it WAY more than I expected to.

I liked it too. I saw that it was on Netflix a few weeks ago and gave it a watch for the hell of it. It's fun! The songs are good!
So, she made your life a living hell during the Anything Goes run I'm guessing? Can you tell me what happened?
Audra McDonald seems great but I've never actually seen her in anything other than a couple Youtube videos (I'm a Broadway novice). She does a very good Billie Holiday

Wait, I figured it out! Was it because during the run of Anything Goes, she left the production to film a TV pilot, and people would come to the show expecting to see her and inevitably take out their frustration on the staff?

Yeah that's most of it. Also she called out a lot. It was hell dealing with entitled subscribers and her erratic behavior.theplatypus wrote:Wait, I figured it out! Yes. And it's a really shitty thing to do in the Broadway world when one isn't actually sick and one's name is above the title.theplatypus wrote:Is that like calling in sick?

What are your favorite movies with plots centered around Broadway or theater more generally?

This is a great question.theplatypus wrote:What are your favorite movies with plots centered around Broadway or theater more generally?
My top ten would be something like:
Birdman
Waiting For Guffman
Noises Off!
Cradle Will Rock
Don't Think Twice
Synecdoche, New York
Being Julia
Chicago
Deathtrap
Shakespeare in Love
But I'm sure I'm forgetting something...

Fuck me, how did I forget Barton Fink? Okay, if Barton Fink counts, then put that #1. That's the best one.

I think that's probably true, but 98% of all art sucks ass, so
