That description is funny but I do think PJ has some great psychedelic potential. I'd love to see them develop in that direction.

Are sales a consideration for this band anymore? They had a spike with the last two re odds I believe, they brought in a good amount of new fans, but I thought their sales were pretty set a certain number worldwide?

Either way it wouldn't hurt to try something slightly psychedelic. They have it in them, though it might be blighted by the punk rock leaning.

I would say it looks like they care to have catchy music than can be played on the radio and sell relatively well. Dark and atmospheric doesn't go too well with that IMO but I'd love to be proven wrong.

I'd agree but that zeitgeist seems to have shifted, on radio here at least. Lot of the new stuff by QOTSA and even the darker Daft Punk is getting played.
Maybe the mood has shifted with the taste makers? It's well time for it.

Those examples are just not what I would call dark, moody music. Look at pretty much any kind of charts. People want to dance and sing along.

Actually gave this a listen, there's some real dynamics in there. The Better Days/Amongst The Waves/Parachutes threesome lovefest works pretty well too.

Psychedelic needn't be too dark (though I have nothing against dark). Grateful Dead are classic psychedelia & not generally too dark, at least often not.

Sure they have the potential, but I don't think they'll ever have the balls to truly explore that potential. They even pussied out of Binaural.

An album is not 'maturer' just because it's written by a band full of older people. The last couple of albums have been fairly juvenile in several spots, whereas something like Vitalogy, No Code, Yield and Binaural are probably more intelligent than they ever intended. Riot Act is a bit overwrought and it marks the beginning of the 'try-too-hard' era, but man, it's far better than the last two in almost every way.

Riot Act is better than a large chunk of the Pearl Jam catalog, says I.

Yeah, Riot Act is excellent. To me it sounds like the last album that the band needed to make, if that makes sense.

It's the last timeless album they've made. S/T and Backspacer were both entertaining for a while. It would be good if the next album had something lasting about it. That's actually all I'll ask for this time around.
