Pearl Jam are great song writers and a great band. Mike has a distinct soling style. He, Ed and Stone have had some short but but sweet playing moments and are capable of a lot more if they choose to. I hope they will.

I complimented them but also stated their guitar parts have been short. I could have lied and said they werent short.

Pearl Jam just aren't that kind of band, for better or worse. Ed during that Bill Simmons interview described them as being a "scrappy" bunch of musicians and I think he has a certain conception of the band as being rough, simple, concise, etc. which no doubt has shaped the way the band operates, setting the outer limits of what's possible.

It's definitely a self-limiting framework to work from in some ways. I don't think it provides room to embrace the kind of explorative musicianship you want to hear but I'm also not sure they're interested in pursuing that kind of thing.

Good points. Its speculation on my part to assume they will expand instrumentally on what they started with gigaton. They didn't start as session musicians, for example, and their focus is possibly on song writing and not primarily on becoming technically better players.

What's going on in this thread and a couple of others... reconstruction_ seeds on what kind of crusade are you on? Are you a Russian troll paid by GVF? ;)

Just kidding, but all of sudden every thread is about GVF or LZ. Please take your GVF and/or LZ comments to the other bands section were I just made a personal post in the GVF thread.

I wasn’t thinking about this thread in particular but the thought I had this morning while listening to Pearl Jam kind of fits. Pearl Jam more or less has mostly been masterful at taking a number of simple elements, be they big riffs and rhythms, and stacking them on one another to come up with a more layered and intricate sounding thing. I was listening to In My Tree when this occurred to me.

Led Zeppelin wasn’t that. They were something different but altogether great also. It makes this a conversation about apples and oranges.

I'll take Hail, hail guitars over... any Zeppelin song.

It's all preference. Some would choose the simplest of nirvana songs over the best zep released. Some songs get old quicker though.
