This doesn't apply to people like Russell and Heckert (which just makes their actions more egregious), but players have been reluctant to use those services because they're afraid that the league and the coaches will find out that they're partying hard and use that information against them. I think there's plenty of blame on both sides of that argument. Still, I could solve that easily as a mediator. The union agrees to stricter DUI penalties, and in exchange the league agrees to not use the free ride services as info against the players.
I understand that arugument, but I mean seriously, the coaches already know these guys are partying and which ones they are. They make enough money to hire their own personal driver anyway. It's completely unacceptable. Goodell needs to take care of the front offices, and the Union needs to take care of emphasis to the players.
If anything the league should be protecting and defending guys using car services because they are protecting the shield and the public. It's almost to the point that coaches need to make an emphasis in post game locker room meetings every week.

I can't find any one tweet to embed as the best, but Tom Nalen has been solid gold on the subject the past couple of days:

Elway liked to drink a bit in the '80's. Just a bit.

All the good 80's QB's either liked the sauce or cocaine.... except maybe Montana, I'm not sure what he's into other than Sketchers.

Bowlen's also been long rumored to be an alcoholic. That's why I said I hope those two aren't next.

Now that it's past 2 PM, I can officially celebrate big time for this news:
This also means I'll finally get around to buying an NFL jersey.

Good contract for both sides. Clady's a stud.

The consensus is clear from the perspective of Pats fans.
If this is for substance abuse (and that would actually be the better scenario), then it's feeling like the entire team needs to spend a weekend at a detox symposium.

My thoughts exactly when I first read about this. I'm the last person to judge someone else for partaking, but my job doesn't randomly test me for it. Frustrating.
*edit
Rumors surfacing MDMA is involved. I can say I DO NOT partake in that.

The way everything has gone so far in training camp and with Von, my expectations for the season have lowered. I've just got a bad feeling about this year now.

The silver lining is that most of this shittiness won't last the whole season. As long as they get in the playoffs (and they should still win the division), anything can happen.

Major putdown leveled by former Broncos GM Ted Sundquist, who served in that capacity from 2002-2007:
I wish Ben was still around to see this after he argued endless against placing the Broncos ahead of the Chargers in my 2000s rankings.
