His dad legitimately was trying to change, and he knew if his dad gave her the money to set her free, it was an act of good faith he could be a better person. He legitimately cared about the lady and wanted to set her free. I don't think it was a selfish act. In the end, he said he was played, and he didn't sound regretful. He's glad to have helped her anyway.
