me to let the longing go
and the promise I still hold
wont tell a soul

The way Ed sings those last two lines is one of my favourite moments on the whole record.

The melody hits me right in the feels.

Ok, i love this one. Its so fucking good really. Lyrically i dont know what it means but the whole ¨wont tell a soul¨ kinda made me remember of Dissident, kinda like the other part of that possible story maybe.

Jeff's story on the Broken Record pod about writing this song in a dream makes me like it even more. It's also interesting that he wrote the lyrics. Might be some of the strongest he's written.

Jeff says otherwise

Does he have a credit in the booklet? I thought this was Jeff's dream, and Eddie used it as a starting point, but the chorus lyrics may have been from Jeff. At this point I don't know where I got what info from, and what has gotten mixed up in my brain

Everyone is credited with every song in the booklet. Nothing individual except features (like Sean Penn on cue ball).

Jeff says he gave the whole thing to Ed and Ed interpreted the song. Which he says took Ed a bit to figure out how to do.

Zane Low interview: Ed and Jeff both wrote the lyrics. Per Ed

Jeff had a version of the song from the dream.

Watt asked if Jeff had anything else to show the band

Showed them this song. Jeff gave ed the lyrics he wrote.

Ed took that, changed the phrasing, and melody a bit, then rewrote lyrics interpreting jeffs lyrics as the dream.

I imagine Ed collaborated on what Jeff gave him. Seems like that was how the whole process worked on DM, more or less.

Yeah that's more or less what Jeff said.

The first page of the booklet says “Lyrics by Vedder”.

Oh does it? I missed that, I guess.

Stone said in one of the interviews that Ed wrote the lyrics too.

But Stone also said he'd been telling the story wrong and let Jeff tell it.

I'm not sure why I'm arguing about this. I'll just believe Jeff and move along.
