I have had a nosy about there and I have a user ID but tbh, it's all a bit scary.theplatypus wrote:Parts of it certainly are. It's a hugely popular site, there's all kinds of people.Sarah. wrote:Isn't Reddit supposed to be a cesspit though? I always thought that was the point of it.

The smaller the subreddit, the less likely it is that you'll encounter a total asshole. Here's a list. You're bound to find something interesting. I recommend Food for Thought, Mildly Interesting, Psychogeography, First World Anarchists, Need Advice (take the advice with a huge grain of salt) and Creepy PMs (this one can be a little mean, but it makes me laugh-- focusing on creepy private messages received by redditors). Those are just a few that I like. There's thousands, about all kinds of things.Sarah. wrote:I have had a nosy about there and I have a user ID but tbh, it's all a bit scary.theplatypus wrote:Parts of it certainly are. this is fundamentally the same reasoning behind why women in Islamic countries are supposed to be veiled and otherwise covered.Harry Lime wrote:Sarah. wrote:And it's not like boys are ever punished for their bad behaviour, so it's up to you ladies.malice wrote:if girls were just better behaved, boys wouldn't have to take advantage of them, yanno?harmless wrote:This is... uh. YOu people need to see the real issue here and not distort what was trying to be expressed in the article. How many college parties have you been to? How many friday or saturday nights have you worked at a freshmen dormitory? Universities all over the country set up saftey meetings for incoming freshmen women, because they come across the dangers written in that article. Is the university then being sexist? Is it blaming young women? No, but they need to instruct possible consequences if not careful. Be of good judgment etc. Because it can help. They're not being assholes, they're looking at statistics and ways to prevent incessant dangers. And you guys feel the need to berate them?
Honestly, you people need to get a grip on reality.

I await your Op-ed on why boys shouldn't rape girls who just happen to be drunk and in college with bated breath.Harry Lime wrote:Sarah. wrote:And it's not like boys are ever punished for their bad behaviour, so it's up to you ladies.malice wrote:if girls were just better behaved, boys wouldn't have to take advantage of them, yanno?harmless wrote:This is... uh. You don't think that prosecuting some of the abusers, and slinging them out of college and into jail would do the same thing in a much more robust, just and effective way?Harry Lime wrote:Malice, look at the statistics. Rape and taking advantage of intoxicated college girls is a fact. It happens. They're only trying to help prevent further dangers. This has nothing to do with telling the girls to stop tempting boys. I thought you might like to write one. For balance. So we can be assholes and distort and berate it.Harry Lime wrote:What are you talking about?!Sarah. wrote:I await your Op-ed on why boys shouldn't rape girls who just happen to be drunk and in college with bated breath.Harry Lime wrote:Sarah. wrote:And it's not like boys are ever punished for their bad behaviour, so it's up to you ladies.malice wrote:if girls were just better behaved, boys wouldn't have to take advantage of them, yanno?harmless wrote:This is... uh. That would be great, if you can get all the abusers. Some of these incidents go unseen, or memory is impaired. It's hard to find the perpetrators.Sarah. wrote:You don't think that prosecuting some of the abusers, and slinging them out of college and into jail would do the same thing in a much more robust, just and effective way?Harry Lime wrote:Malice, look at the statistics. dude, the problem is that taking advantage of drunk (stupidly so, admittedly) girls is perfectly acceptable behavior, by college boys and by men of all ages, really. this society approaches these issues ass-backwards.Harry Lime wrote:Malice, look at the statistics. I agree. The guys should be instructed as well. But what I feel you're attacking is already inherent in the environment. Some guys are asshole predators. How do you prevent that? It's like telling everyone in the neighborhood of Compton, CA to be polite & respective to outsiders. But if you know of a way to help reduce these college rapes by instructing boys to not be assholes, please, by all means, find your nearest local university and tell them.malice wrote:dude, the problem is that taking advantage of drunk (stupidly so, admittedly) girls is perfectly acceptable behavior, by college boys and by men of all ages, really. this society approaches these issues ass-backwards.Harry Lime wrote:Malice, look at the statistics. you don't tell the girls to behave themselves so the poor men don't have to take advantage of them. you educate the boys throughout their lives to stop giving into their baser instincts and act like men instead of prick mother fuckers who actively seek out easy pussy to get for the evening. get me?
telling women to not drink while the men can continue their shitty treatment of women as long as the open excuse of 'she was completely wasted, bro' is allowable is sexist and fucked up on so many levels that it's not even a joke.
you think women should be held to a higher standard of behavior simply because in this culture, and in most cultures, for men, it's nearly a rite of passage, even now with you oh, so, very enlightened gen-y kids. guys still get all the benefit of the doubt and girls are told to keep their legs crossed, be good, and stop acting like tramps.
bullshit, I say.
it's a girl thingSarah. wrote:Jeez malice, you're so narrow minded.
I would also add that a lack of this proper action, coupled with the "advice" I linked to only contributes to the unneeded and wrongful fear placed upon women that rapists are just around the corner, and they're on their own to deal with it. Living with that kind of fear around is pretty shitty.Sarah. wrote:You don't think that prosecuting some of the abusers, and slinging them out of college and into jail would do the same thing in a much more robust, just and effective way?Harry Lime wrote:Malice, look at the statistics.
