I'm sure Billy's up for a bit of discussion on Nirvana
He's said a lot of great things about Nirvana over the last few years. Actually, he pretty regularly kisses Kurt's ass in interviews, saying that most musicians today can't hold a candle to what him and his peers accomplished, particularly Kurt.
He's also known to lurk on fan boards from time to time. I don't know what that says about him, but the criticism about him I read in Pitchfork is most definitely true - one thing that turns people off about him is that he's his own band's biggest fan.

He seemed like a pretty decent chap when I met him wandering down the street when they were last here

Someone at Geffen obviously thought highly enough of Bleach to sign Nirvana to a major label deal based on the strength of it. Considering it hardly fit the formula of what was selling in huge numbers at the time, that counts for something in my eyes. And Bleach very much was critically lauded upon it's release, so the idea that it's only held up because of Nevermind and In Utero doesn't really hold water in my opinion.

bleach is like a fart you slipped out semi-consciously and then only finally started smelling like a few minutes later, forgetting that you farted, and causing you to aggressively question other people as to whether they farted, because it is so potent
where farts = good

Look up Geffen being the worst kind of screaming lecherous fag determined to get into Kurts pants and there you'll find a record deal.

just so we're clear on what you mean, is "screaming lecherous fag" used as an expression of disdain in Dublin vernacular?

Of course. Guys, Nirvana only got signed cause David Geffen wanted to fuck Kurt.
All of the critics who fell over themselves to praise them probably just wanted to fuck Kurt. And the college radio programmers who were playing Bleach just wanted to do him as well. The kids across the country who accounted for what were very healthy sales figures considering it was Sub Pop in 1988-1989 just wanted to lick Kurt's asshole. Bruce & Jonathan actually only deemed Nirvana to be the first artist worth actually signing to an extended Sub Pop contract because they thought they might get rim jobs out of it.
