That album just ends without any bang whatsoever. I really feel you have to listen to the trilogy to get any sense of satisfaction with this one. I fucking love a handful of tracks but overall it just wont do it for me.
You and I are on a roll tonight, friend, because it's easily my favorite of "the trilogy."

I just love the collection of songs, mostly. For me, there just isn't a bummer in the bunch. It's concise. It's lyrical. It has fantastic range. It flows really well. FWY is a bit messy, and Rain Dogs isn't messy enough. There isn't a single song that I skip On Swordfish, and I can't pick a favorite. Every time a song starts I think, This one is my favorite! But then the next song comes on and I think, No, THIS one is my favorite.

Really, just the way he sings "leaned it up against a dandelion tree" makes it the best one of the three.
the track was available for listening about three weeks ago (maybe it was just for a couple of days though).
because i wasn't familiar with Shenandoah, i was hoping this was some kind of aye-aye drunken pirates sea-chantey kind of thing that one could easily expect from a Waits/Richards collaboration so i was disappointed

I played it at work. One of my co-workers (a huge Waits fan) loved it. Another co-worker (someone who doesn't know Waits at all) laughed out loud. He thought it was a joke. The other co-worker and I just couldn't explain it to him.

Mule Variations is probably my #3 or #4 Tom Waits album. Bone Machine is my #1.

Bone Machine is like drinking a Guinness for me. Not something I want to do every day, but rewarding and satisfying from time to time.
I would say my current favorite is Real Gone. I love the demented delta blues thing he has going on and lyrically its pretty special.

Yeah. It's not an easy album, but I think it's easily one of the top 5 best albums ever recorded by any artist.
I tend to listen to Blood Money and Mule Variations more often, though. Because they're also great and easier to listen to more often.
