i think when people talk about "hair metal" they are really talking about the pop rock bullshit that came out in the 80s like bon jovi, motely crue, etc. i dont really like van halen, but eddie van halen is an incredibly talented guitarist. its pretty easy to see why someone like mike mccready would be dig it.

If Bon Jovi is in fact what is being compared to Pearl Jam then it's pretty obvious it's the ol' Red Mosquito forum shtick at work. The two bands are 100% different in every single way. I do remember a picture Ed took with Bon Jovi at a Sean Penn fundraiser and it was a horrific site.
Yeah he should have declined that. He doesn't put nearly enough thought into his internet cred.

No, but it's a step in that direction for sure.
In 2010 when Pearl Jam covered Van Halen's Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love for the first time, they prefaced it by saying it was an idea Ed had, Jeff immediately said it was a terrible idea, but for the fun of it they all agreed to do it "one time, one time only".
Fast forward 3 years and they cover it again and Eruption is in their touring rotation.

I had to get over the cheese sound and the structure. That could be what you mean. After maybe 5 listens, I was struck simultaneously by the incredible lyrics and the musical depth. I love it now, but it's still a weird and unique one.

Maybe it's me, but I don't really hear much hair metal in Sirens, besides the solo at parts. It's way more that kind of 3 Doors Down/Nickelback 2000-era crap rock that I hear.

I saw Brad at a small club in TX, back in 1997. Stone was wearing a VH necklace and they played Change. BTW, isolate the vocals for any band, and there's a good chance it sounds stupid. Sound engineers who leak that kind of stuff out are meanies.

Honestly, if Pearl Jam made a straight up hair metal album in 2014, 95% of the dude-bro segment of the fanbase (which is a huge segment of the fanbase) would think it was the greatest thing ever. If they went out and covered Pour Some Sugar on Me or Welcome to the Jungle or Livin' on a Prayer at every show for the rest of their lives, most of this fanbase would fucking love it.
