Any time anyone over 40 declares anything cultural to be "dead," I pretty much immediately write them off as an ignorant/elitist crank.

so instead now Neil wants us to spend $450 on a pono player or $80 on one of his records.

I was there.
AM radio kicked streaming's ass.
Analog Cassettes and 8 tracks also kicked streaming's ass,
and absolutely rocked compared to streaming.
Streaming sucks. Streaming is the worst audio in history.
If you want it, you got it. It's here to stay.
Your choice.
Copy my songs if you want to. That's free.
Your choice.
All my music, my life's work, is what I am preserving the way I want it to be.
It's already started. My music is being removed from all streaming services. It's not good enough to sell or rent.
Make streaming sound good and I will be back.

Haha AM radio? Really? Streaming usually sounds pretty bad but no way in hell does it sound worse than AM radio.

If he really wants to talk about quality...
can we talk about 80% of his records int he past 10 years?

He just needs to accept that the vast majority of people who listen to music do not care and never have cared about how good it sounds. They don't even think about it. People who do care will seek out high quality. It's not really a big deal. It's not like anyone's legacy is being destroyed.

It must suck to have such a refined sense of hearing. I listen to garbage like Spotify all day every day and never once think about the audio quality.

We got a free Sirius XM trial and I have been stunned by how terrible the Pearl Jam, Springsteen, and Grateful Dead stations sound. I can't imagine listening to music in that quality, and I'm hardly an audio snob. It sounds like someone trying to play you something over the phone.

I just got that as well and I think that is just a sirius thing. Its so bad and really unlistenable (except for the stand up comedy). All of my streaming sounds absolutely fine. rdio.com

I find the quality of even Spotify intolerably bad and I'm broadly sympathetic to Neil's concerns but I don't think pulling his music from those services achieves anything at all.

agreed with this
The problem I find with digital fidelity is the amount of points that it hinges on. A good stream (the source), your internet connection, your settings... and then if you get that right, your headphones, your earbuds. There's just too many things that can go wrong or can cause a hindrance in the flow.
Not to mention if you're streaming through some wild stereo setup.
For instance: our comcast internet drops out every so often. Sometimes for hours at a time. And several times, this has happened while streaming tunes through Sonos. But guess what doesn't depend on my Comcast? My mf'ing records.

I download and save 320kb music files from Google Play on my phone, or stream 320kb files when connected directly to an ethernet cable at my computer. I wonder how Neil would feel about this. I get the feeling he thinks all streaming is done at 128kbs and doesn't know that a lot of services offer the ability to download and save high quality (320kbs) files to a device.
Though it's possible I'm being duped and these files are not really 320kbs.

Next, Neil is buying all his albums on cassette off ebay and burning them.

I can't speak for those others but the Pearl Jam station is soooo bad. I was a subscriber for about 2 years and I had to stop listening to PJ regularly after the first month or so. I pulled the plug completely last month and pretty much rely on spotify and my records.
Good thing I have my Neil collection backed up twice.

I have Spotify premium and have it set at 320 kbps. Have never had a problem with the quality since I became a subscriber.

I think I'm the only person in America who has never used Spotify.
