I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt because I get the impression that Shepard Smith is a standup guy, and it sounded like maybe he just worded it awkwardly, but his apology was ridiculous.

Shep Smith always came off like a good dude to me it was probably just a diarrhea of the mouth situation. You talk all day for a living something dumb is going to come out.
