I love the uneasy, inverted tension of the verses, and the slow burn in the narrator's frustration as he gets closer and closer to the chorus. Musically it matches the lyrics in a way the pedestrian "prettiness" of Puzzles & Games' verses don't even begin to. The release of the chorus works beautifully as well in that it's more of an answer-less sob of physical grief than an explosion of epiphany. It expresses a sentiment that's simultaneously complex & simple in way that's true to both sides of the coin without sacrificing either one for the sake of the other. It's the kind of unique piece very few bands could have pulled off as successfully as they do here.

The best bit of the song is the part they kept from Puzzles & Games, the instrumental bridge.

That verse in Puzzles where Ed is mumbling on about being just a drunk, or whatever he's saying, kind of puts a brick wall to any momentum the song was building.

I never really understood what was wrong with Light Years for some people and what Puzzles and Games had that people preferred it to. I guess it's just one of those instances where people just like "work in progress" sounding like songs.

I am not one of those people. I prefer Puzzles and games because I generally go in for that type of song more than what they were trying to do with Light Years. The unfinished quality does let you fill in the blanks though, and in my mind the blanks are awesome

No matter how much we fought it, this place was going to end up that way anyway.

Oh, I'm sure they are, and I don't really hold it against the band that the lyrics aren't done; it's a demo. But if people start comparing it to Light Years, and saying it's better, I think the problems that are due to it being unfinished are fair game.

They hired me just so there's someone geographically close to you. At any time they will say the word, and I'll be knocking on your door.
