Hey fella, it's a gross job but somebody's gotta do it.

That's as far as I got.darth_vedder wrote:Sorry, late to the "punk" thing...Man, I like it. I guess I don't go out of my way to listen to it, but the whole genre is so wide, but I feel it's being boiled down to just "it's fast". While that it true
I said it in the context of Matt Cameron. I'm a drummer. I don't care how interesting the stuff on top is, by and large, or what influences the music has. I always feel sorry for the drummer of a punk band. His job is unequivocally boring. Unless he's passionate about punk and then he's probably thrilled to death that he gets to perform 23 times the same thing every night during a tour.darth_vedder wrote:Sorry, late to the "punk" thing...Man, I like it. While that it true, a lot of it has rockabilly influence, and reggae, and even dub. A lot of those guys credit the Kinks as a big influence. The Clash were kinda all over the place. The Ramones played fast, but also had some California Surf sound in their music. It's not all just screaming and playing fast.
It's not all fast!harmless wrote:That's as far as I got.darth_vedder wrote:Sorry, late to the "punk" thing...Man, I like it. I guess I don't go out of my way to listen to it, but the whole genre is so wide, but I feel it's being boiled down to just "it's fast". While that it true

I like that song that goes Dog Eat Dog Eat Dog Eat Dog Eat Dog Eat Dog Eat Dog Eat Dog Eat Dog, can't think of its name right nowEJ wrote:I used to like Adam & The Ants when I was a kid. May I be of assistance in this "punk" debate?
Of course there are exceptions to this, but it does tend to be a kind of playing that works towards the song rather than a showcase of the drummer's abilities. I'm fine with that-- like I said before, to me punk rock is just the ultimate pop music.harmless wrote: I always feel sorry for the drummer of a punk band. His job is unequivocally boring. you must be 4 times as discerning as me, thentheplatypus wrote:I count eight.stip wrote:probably just 2 ways.theplatypus wrote:That's so gross, in so many ways.
And I totally get that. Most punk fans I've met love it because it's the ultimate kick-back music. With a beer and whatever your chosen snack is and maybe a bong and a game of Top Trumps. And it's got to be loud. I totally get that. And in those contexts, I can enjoy it.theplatypus wrote:Of course there are exceptions to this, but it does tend to be a kind of playing that works towards the song rather than a showcase of the drummer's abilities. All of the above. I just don't like straight-up punk.
