Thread where we discuss Nels Cline.

Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

Yeah, that's great! Some real noisy, math-rocky vibes going on in the end of that track. I'm still digesting the album as a whole but for the most part I think I love it. Some great freak-out moments but also a lot of really smart, sympathetic interplay between guitar, bass, sax, and drums.

I haven't been wowed by this one overall, which is continuing a bit of a trend for Nels' studio recordings for me.

I liked Lovers a lot but that was kind of a genre-themed exercise.

Otherwise, I think the core Nels catalogue is pretty settled for me as stretching from 1995's Ground through 2010's Initiate, which is a pretty incredible run in any event.

I'm glad he's still at it and every record still has several really high points.

Did you get into Share the Wealth at all? That was the only other more recent one that I liked almost as much as Lovers. Haven't actually listened to this new one yet though.
A bit like this one, a few things I liked but nothing that compelled me back for repeated listens.

I need to go back through some of his older catalog, I caught onto him in the early 2010’s and have kept up with current stuff, but haven’t really gone very far back. I love the recent records so maybe I’d really love the older ones.

The only thing pre-Initiate that I’ve checked out is New Monastery, which I wasn’t a huge fan of.

The three Nels Cline Trio records from the 90s are fantastic: Ground (1995), Chest (1996) and Sad (1998).

They're certainly leaning into the louder, more Sonic Youth-esque side of Nels' work.

The first few Nels Cline Singers records are likewise just super: Instrumentals (2002) and The Giant Pin (2004).

I think all/most of these are now on Spotify but aren't very well organised (The Giant Pin, for example, is erroneously listed as by "various artists" and not easy to find).
