Is is kinda interesting that whatever issues he was having with his voice during the Audioslave (live anyways) years seems to have repaired itself. If he was an athlete I'd suspect he was hitting the roids. :D

I seem to recall some radio sessions he did talking about drinking heavily and basically not giving a fuck, especially for the self-titled album.

"When asked how Cornell beat all his addictions he stated, "It was a long period of coming to the realization that this way (sober) is better. Going through rehab, honestly, did help, and I'm not....it got me away from just the daily drudgery of depression and either trying to not drink or do drugs or doing them and you know, they give you such a simple message that any idiot can get and it's just over and over, but the bottom line is really, and this is the part that is scary for everyone, the individual kinda has to want it...not kinda, you have to want it and to not do that crap anymore or you will never stop and it will just kill you."

I'd like to retract what I initially (emphatically) said about this album being incredibly average. It's really grown on me after a few listens. While I still feel there are some boring/corny turds on here (Josephine, Circling), there are some real highlights too. The retake of Misery Chain really stands out--truly a gorgeous tune all around and much better than the original IMO. We've spewed a lot of shit about O'brien's production over the last 10 years (and rightfully so), but they both hit Misery Chain out of the park. Other high marks go to Dead Wishes, Worried Moon, Through The Window, Only These Words, and Wrong Side. I can even stand Before We Disappear, Murderer of Blue Skies, and the title track now where before I couldn't get all the way through. Yes, these do feel cliche and overly polished, but (once again) the vocal performance makes them listenable.

Higher Truth still doesn't come close to topping Euphoria Mourning, but it has to be said again that this is the best I've heard his vocals on record since, well, Euphoria Mourning. Really looking forward to how a majority of these new tunes will turn out live, mixed with the classics, with Cornell (hopefully) in top form. Carry on....

I'm surprised I like Only These Words. I think I literally agree with all your picks for standout tracks.

Listening to this album now, and I'm bored. Chris sounds quite good throughout, but the songs are so bland. The "Higher Truth" song has some elements of a pretty good tune, got a bit of Beatlesque vibe to it, but somehow it falls short - maybe its the monotonous chorus or just a bit cheesy?

ugh, it all sounds the same and becomes monotonous. he has a great voice but he's not a very interesting singer.

What time did he take the stage? Was there an opening act?

If you're talking to me, Tom...

Showtime was 7:30. We got hung up in traffic, and finally made it to the venue about 8:10. Opener was done, and the bathroom lines were too long for me to gear up. Had to basically bite the bullet and do it in full view of anyone who wanted to watch, as we were front of the inside of the balcony. Chris took the stage a bit before 8:30, I'd say.

Hemming opened when I saw him and she was great. Cornell was obviously amazing, Fell on Black Days with the dude playing the cello was just one of those holy shit moments that don't happen very often.
