Like most of us here (it seems) I'm a medium rare guy, but if I had to choose between going to the next level over or the next level under, I would choose over. I don't like the slimier texture of rare steak. I don't like that fat doesn't get hot enough to properly render. Medium isn't ideal but I'd take it over rare.
If the choice was rare vs. well done I'd take it rare though, obviously.

when it comes to steak doneness, the only people that should ever be judged harshly are those that get it medium and above. anyone that orders steak medium rare on down are immune from criticism.

I had a piece of A5 Wagyu raw at a sushi restaurant and now that is the only steak I ever want to eat.
