Oh goodie, the knee-jerk polar opposite to the thread premise -- if you don't defer to the received wisdom of trendy magazines, it's because you're stuck in some nostalgic black hole which renders you incapable of "getting it." Granted, Trag's case against Solange here isn't exactly thesis-level stuff, but come on -- the "Pearl Jam message board" thing is just as dumb.

It sounds like a Madonna outtake circa True Blue. And she has all the charisma of a 14-year old turnip.
We are so far apart on this I really think it would be pointless to try to change your mind, so I'm not going to. I think you know how facile your comparisons are.

I listened to part of the Solange album, though not intently, and found it nice enough. Reminded me of the Jean Grae EP from a couple years ago

What is the music equivalent to the film vs. movies debate? Songs vs. tunes?

Do you consider yourself less capable of discerning the motivations behind a song's genesis than you are a movie's? Or is it just that you lack a term for it? Or does it matter less?

Lots to unpack there and I'm out shopping, but I like your post (though I do think the second point holds up a lot better than the first). Essentially: BRB

It's not a "hatred of the rich." Some of my very best friends are obscenely wealthy. But I do have a hatred for when people of significant means use their station in life to create artwork that is boring, derivative, and not challenging. It's really crappy for those people who are working shitty jobs to achieve their own creative dreams.
i'm with you trag

My comparisons are intentionally facile because no matter how hard I look, I see nothing more than a talentless rich person apeing other people's music. I will concede that I have not paid very close attention to her lyrics, and so perhaps there is more worth diving into there.
So, we are dealing with your personal convictions against "the industry" and delusions about artistic intent and merit. Unfortunately, you can't be wrong about not liking her (though I feel the need to clarify that lyrics are peripheral for me and it is the production and expressiveness of the music that I enjoy), but I think it's fair to observe that you come off as quite jaded.

I think, ultimately, it boils down to what kind of attention an artist gets, especially when it seems to be undeserved based on artistic merit. does anyone believe that Solange would be getting rave reviews and performing on SNL and headlining festivals if she wasn't Beyonce's sister??

Sure, the album is entirely fine, if that's your taste. Nothing offensively bad whatsoever. It's just that we've been pummeled with it across music review sites, year end lists, etc. We've been told again and again that it's an amazing album. And I think what trag is saying – and what i think myself – is that the album itself doesn't seem to deserve it? Is that Solange's fault? Not at all. Is it the fault of every blog and music site in the world ranking it as a Top 5 album of 2016 bc it got rave reviews from Pitchfork and other sites upon release? Doesn't help.
