The former two were 23 years ago, and LTRP was composed by both of them. Stone started with a great riff, and Ed made it just the intro and rearranged the living crap out of the song until it wasn’t recognizable anymore. Supersonic is hot garbage though, agreed.
Strat wrote:Ed wrote grievance and insignificance. Stone wrote let the records play and supersonic.
Again - this isn't Ed's fault.

Also, tongue in cheekness aside, it’s probably fair to say what the band has evolved into is not 100% Ed’s fault. Evolve is the operative word because they’re all different people now with different perspectives and new and different life priorities (family, side projects, organizations they support…). This all started because of the “muse” comment, which called to a specific issue between Stone and Ed. But the shaping of the band today is mostly Ed’s fault. He is the ultimate decider of what songs make it into albums and what they will sound like. He heavily influences what others write so they write for him.
I’m also not entirely mad at it because they’ve all found a way to make compromises and keep playing together after all these years whereas most bands would have folded a long time ago. They’re like an old marriage that lost the spark a long time ago but agreed to stick around for the kids (us). And it’s incredibly admirable that they’ve found a way to make it work. The marriage may not have the passion it once had, and some sides compromised more than others, but they are making it work somehow.
I’m grateful that they’re still making new music even to this day. If only to hear flashes and moments of brilliance that harken back to their best work, and lament their inability to attain that brilliance anymore even though all the same elements and pieces appear to be there. How can we not lament that the same guy who once wrote Corduroy, arguably the best PJ song ever, now writes songs that mostly sound like SBWM. I’m even grateful to be able to bitch about it all on this board.

Also also, funnily enough I coincidentally listened to King Animal yesterday for the first time in a long time. A Thousand Days Before and By Crooked Steps are outstanding songs, among their best. There are other little gems on the album too like Taree and Rowing. I also find that some of the songs like Been Away Too Long and Attrition sound more like they could be PJ songs; something about the chord progression and song structure.

Two different albums and years apart tho. Not really a fair comparison. What were Stone’s Binaural contributions? Keeping in mind Ed wrote Speed of Sound and Swallowed Whole.

I’m on team Gigaton is actually a really good (not great) album, but better than Backspacer and the Brendan O’Brien polished tied that is Lightning Bolt.
I also believe Ed is one of the main reasons the band’s music got less creative and interesting due to his creative dictatorship, AND that Stone and the rest don’t really mind or care anymore because they’re too old, have other outlets, and are happy with this cash cow. Except Jeff. Jeff still cares. He needs help.
yep

King Animal was outstanding IMO. Soundgarden had far more creativity left in the tank than PJ sadly.

Well, Pearl Jam did release five albums in the time between Down on the Upside and King Animal.

Yeah, that seems like an important detail.

Ed’s 5-against-1 fantasies should be realized on this next album
give the man what he wants
and that will set him straight

Pearl Jam - Pet Sounds (Ed would rather be with an animal)

Cornell was hardly a slouch during those years...

I'd say at least a couple from Gigaton.

pearl jam released 5 albums during those times, which led to an aggregate of about 3 usable/desirable songs for the live show
just like Ed's hair, those years are lost and not coming back
and could have been put to better use while they still had it
like for an instrumental album
or one that didn't include word salad
or spritzy
or kicky doos
just real sweaty testicle-based grit
need that sweaty ball smell
they never achieved it in that time
king animal makes my balls sweat
