And it sounds like he respects you, so you should find the time to have a frank conversation about both of your future trajectories at the company. My FiL spent his entire career at a Fortune 500 company, for the last 20 years reporting to the same guy: when he went up a rung, my FiL did the same…Until the guy retired, and the C-level opted not to make my FiL the division president, but instead someone much younger at a fraction of the cost. FiL retired very sore about that.
More like the business could afford to hire another person to divide the tasks he had growing on his plate. A two person team became a three person team, became a four person team. Etc. We had five, now we’re back to four.

I should probably apply for the opening he leaves behind, and we hire a new marketer. Technically then, I would be in charge of the product lines profitability and also would supervise the new marketer. That’s an angle.

Our company has a strong internal women’s network too - and the old guard has been working me into things also.

I think I’ll ask new boss his thoughts are on finding his replacement. It’s time for me to run the ball.

year end review

weird year as i changed bosses pretty late in the year. no major raises just a flat standard for everyone but what shocked me is how i was rated. our company is a little backwards and goes from 1-5 with 1 the best and 5 pretty much on probation. 3, 2, and 1 are the targets as threes for my cohort means you are capable at your job.

i ended up being rated a 2 and this was arrived at by a combo of the last 4 months working with my new manager, 8 months of my old manager giving his opinion and upward feedback from various people. because of the high score my bonus is now 10% of my salary. my principle at rocket will enjoy it

I don’t think we’re meant to stay at the same thing for our entire lives, but there’s something to be said about leaning on your soft skills and adjacency to what you’re currently doing, when you’re looking for new opportunities.

I teach a career perspectives course and those soft skills are the most in-demand skills companies are looking for. They’re also notoriously hard to demonstrate!
I read a HBR article this morning, that posed a question on resiliency as it relates to work. Majority stated that less than reliable coworkers were killing their motivation. Work politics and difficult personalities being the key factors.

Time mgmt is the most important soft skill, or at least neck and neck with communication. It’s also the hardest to master.

I guess what I was getting at is the highly skilled can often be unmanageable, because they think they know it all/fully grasp the big picture.
