Today's entry is Naughty or Nice - In this movie, the Female Lead is named Krissy Kringle. This is important to the plot because what gets everything going is that the postal service accidentally delivers Santa's "Naughty or Nice" list to her house instead of the North Pole because, you know, their names are similar. Let's pause here for a minute: why the hell was Santa's list being sent through the mail in the first place? This is never explained, even though at the end Santa shows up and is like, "Ho ho ho, give me the book back, slut." Whatever, I really couldn't get past this oversight. Before Krissy gets the book, she gets fired from her job as an ad exec and has to take seasonal work at a department store's Christmas Land (the same shit from the move Elf, think of it that way); her boyfriend, though, is cool with it and sticks by her through it all. All of these movies treat a job where you get an hourly wage as a living hell; I've had a number of jobs and can confirm that they can be a living hell (especially around the holidays, where I once worked at two bookstores at the same time), but these movies tend to treat it like a fate worse than death to not be making a salary. Once Krissy learns that she can use Santa's book to figure out when people have been naughty, she begins to use it to her advantage: she finds out that her boss has been stealing petty cash, that her neighbor has been stealing Christmas decorations, and she bribes a nerdy co-worker into helping her by finding out he lies to his girlfriend in order to go to sports bars. The two biggest revelations are that one of her co-workers at the ad agency stole her ideas in order to get promoted (which led to Krissy's firing) and that her boyfriend slept with her the summer before. This leads to a meltdown and a public breakup with her beau, and it's only now that she realizes that this power may be too much to bear. In a too-quick conclusion, Krissy's mother reminds her that she and her b/f were "on a break" when he slept with her devious co-worker (although it's never mentioned that he never told her this happened--come on, lie by omission), and she realizes that the book can also show you when people have been nice, and she learns that people are much more complex than being "good" or "bad." In the end, she makes up with her boyfriend, gets her old job back, and, as I mentioned above, Santa gets his books back. There are weird parts of this story, but at least it avoids some of the stickier gender politics of some of the other movies.

Despite a pretty good performance by Blunt, this movie felt like there was no idea whatsoever about how to treat the material....They were more interested in copy the mood and look of Gone Girl than make a good adaption of the book. What a shame.

I bought Lincoln on Blu-ray weeks ago, after having seen it back in 2012 when it came out. I enjoyed it immensely back then, and watching it again right now I love it.

For the most part, it feels like Spielberg at his least showy. Sure, there are moments but overall it's very understated. I'm not a huge Daniel Day-Lewis fan, but this is probably my favourite DDL film.

I love talky films when something substantial is being spoken of, and what's more substantial than the issue of slavery? I love that Spielberg didn't go for the traditional biopic and show us Lincoln growing up, getting into politics etc. Instead, as Empire nicely put it we are thrown into the film as Lincoln is at the furnace door of crisis. It's much more effective at showing us who Lincoln really was when we see how he attempted to deal with abolishing slavery.

It still feels weird to see how the Republicans were overwhelmingly anti-slavery, while Democrats were so pro-slavery.

Love Actually. Because nothing says Thanksgiving like a British romantic dramedy set at Christmastime.

Well, i enjoyed it. It was fun, and looks really nice.

Watched 10 Cloverfield Lane with my wife and my mom tonight. They spent the first 10 minutes like because they thought it was about to get very rapey, then the last 10 minutes like because neither of them knew anything about Cloverfield. In between I think they liked it. I loved it.

Well, what a good debut...i liked their second film Spring better, but this is a really cool movie.
